I know this topic has prob been done to death, but...

Fuel consumption.

Now, as you can see from my profile, we've got a 52-plate 3.2 MV6 (ex plod - hence manual).  It's got 125k under it's belt.

Before we got it, looking at Parkers on t'internet, it said that avg mpg is 24mpg for an auto (no manual listed).  So, I thought at best I'd expect 26 - 27mpg out of it, on account of it being a manual.

But, when I've checked it's consumption since we've had it, its averaged 32mpg - and thats doing a mix of motorway driving, and being stuck in city-centre traffic (and I'm not that light with my right foot either).

My missus has got a P-plate 1.3 Fiesta with 90k on it, and doing similar journeys gets 35mpg.

I know it's not a like-for-like comparison - the Omega is obviously much higher-geared than the Fiesta which makes for more economical cruising on the motorway, but it's also got plenty of grunt at lower-speeds - I can sink the Omega into 5th at 25mph.

For the sake on 3mpg difference, I know what I'd sooner be driving - and it don't have a blue oval and a rattley camshaft on it!    And I think I could get better mpg out of the Omega if I was a bit more careful with the right pedal (like showing beemer drivers who's boss at the lights from time to time   )

So, after this long ramble - what kind of mpg are you guys getting?

Aye, it has - at 40k, then 80k, then 120k - I got me GCSE in Maths (against all odds) I'll have ye know!

My 3.2 auto MV6 averages about 27 or 28 on my normal commute. That's a mix of urban driving and "A"roads, and fairly gentle with the occasional hoon to the red line .

Motorway cruising at 65/70 it has averaged 36 over 100 miles. Up the cruising speed to 80 and it's probably down to 30, perhaps 32.

It is thirsty in very dense urban traffic, as a heavy car with an auto box will be.  Those are the journeys when you want a Ford Fester

So, add a couple of MPG for the manual box (especially in urban driving. once the torque converter is locked up the auto probably doesn't make much odds) and it's looking comparable.

Well, I only do on my holidays abroad, of course!

As I found out this summer, the really telling thing about these cars is how nicely they cruise at 120 on the autobahn with the cruise control on. Fuel consumption aint that spectacular then, though

Well, on the autobahn was where we were this summer, but that was in the old Jeep, powered by Dr Diesel's invention, with shed in tow...

We're planning on doing the same next summer, but tenting and hotelling (if that's a word...) it - over there.

I'm just now, as I type, digging out the receipt from my last fill-up (I keep em all, writing the miles what I've done on the back of em - I'm sad like that!     )

That's the way to do it.   Went down to Italy and back this summer.

Right, got my last receipt.  Here goes...

I got 42.06 Litres, at 98.9p a Litre (why's it alway .9 at the end??   )

Which, dividing by 4.54, is 9.45 gallons.

I did 307 miles to that, which works out as:

32.48mpg

Mine is a 2.5 manual. 18mpg is hammering it, which I regularly do on the way to work! It will see 30+ mpg on a run. although, my 3.0 manual was better on fuel.

The interviews went well, and I passed the exams. I just need to wait now!

Good man on the job front - I'm chuffed for you!  

But what you say about your 3.0 being better on the ol' motion lotion - thats what I meant when I started this thread.  My theory is you can have a smaller lump that doesn't neccessarily do more mpg than a bigger one (oooo err missus   )
