That's bloody good...

I get 18mpg on my commute, all A roads and dual carraige way!

 :o :o :o 18  :o :o

Ragging the nuts off my 2.2 constantly i can never get it below 28..... and i do try hard!   ;D ;)

But you have two cylinders missing ;D

Having driven 2.5 manuls and 3.0 autos... those extra 2 pots do sod all for any real performance difference ....

My 2.2 auto is SLOW AND only averages 24-25mpg on a mix of A roads and city driving!!  Never ever had any better than 30mpg and has only 37k on the clock!!!  Something must be wrong with mine, surely??? :'( :'(

When was the last time you cleaned out the throttle body and breathers?

Has it had regular oil changes i.e. 5K or less?

When was the last time the fuel filter changed?

Marks DTM read the codes last week with Tech2 when he did the autobox upgrade (and climate and cruise enabled!) and returned no errors.  All other readings which Mark checked appeared normal.

Cleaned TB and breathers during the summer - breathers were clear but TB was kacked up.  Oil and filter was changed with vx fully synth at last service in March (11k ago).  Also this service changed plugs, air and fuel filter.

Any other ideas??  Could plug gaps need adjusting??  When I accelerate hard, does feel as though it is holding back.  Progress through the 'power band' is not smooth either, feels like there is a 'flat spot' present.

Any help would be much appreciated!!! :y

Check exhausts ??  Several folks on the forum have reported exhaust pipe failures through "blocking up" .. I had it on mine when a load of hairy wadding came out the back ...  new exhausts went on and performance increased dramatically  :)

That is far too long. The specified oil changes are to please fleet managers, not look after the engine.  Nobody makes an automotive oil that lasts beyond about 7k, hence I normally recommend <5k oil changes.

Not that changing the oil will improve performance immediately, but a kind service schedule will slowly bring some performance back.

Forget adjusting - if in doubt just change them.  Easy job and not much more than a fiver on TC.

Did you make sure to clean the small breather and its port just below the throttle body?  Made a huge difference on my 4 pot.

Will change the oil again this week - is it worth the extra for fully synthetic??  Probably worth another service for what the parts will cost whilst I'm at it!  The last service was two years previous (before I owned it) but only covered 5k between then and when I first owned it, so 'missed' at least an annual service, so you could say the car had been a little bit neglected!

not in my opinion.

My MV6 gets a fresh lot of Vx Semi Synth every 3 - 4k.

Trash a V6 and it will leave a 2.0 or 2.2 for dust, over a certain road altered figures where fastest is given 100 points (NOT mph)

2.0 81
2.6 98
3.0 100
2.0 H/C Carlton 86
1.6 Sunbeam 95

Another
2.0 88
2.6 98
3.0 100

BTW this is more fun because you don't know if I scaled up or down but Another was lower values

i don't tow a burger van  ;)
With lots of oil changes and proper maintenance  my 2.2 has come on leaps and bounds.

I then drove a 2.5 manual... i felt hardly any difference.

I much, much, MUCH prefer working on the 2.2 for engine maintenance, its just so easy to work on.

I just don't like the V6 engine.

This was back road thrashing, van got it down to 17mpg - and I think the 2.0 has now been scrapped (not on tax or insurance registers :'().

If you can't get a car down to 20mpg either you are too slow or the car is

Update on fuel consumption on my 2.2 auto (filled up today) - this has been the WORST consumption so far for my usual weekly running:

MID reading:  Ave. Speed: 26mph  Miles covered:  270.1  Miles left:  76  Ave. Cons 23.4mpg!!!  >:( >:(

Bought plugs, air filter oil and filter to change this week.  If anyone can PLEASE help me to sort this out to achieve 'normal' fuel consumption this would be much appreciated!!!

Thanx

Dan
