Temp guage reading

On my way home last night I noticed after 2 or 3 miles town and A-road driving the engine temperature guage was still showing Zero.
I started thinking maybe the fuse had gone but noticed when I got back into Stop-Start driving, the guage started to move but not above the 1/4. Coolant level ok.  
Outside temp was showing 1 deg. Is this normal for cold(ish) weather ?

When the weather has been nice and quite warm my temp gauge reads around 92-95. Since the weather has turned cold the temp gauge now sits around 90-92.

mine usually takes a good few minutes to move, and in this weather it stays around 82-95 at most, unless i drive for an hour or so and aim for heavy traffic, then it hits 90, but getting out of traffic and a steady 30 cruise, it site at around 85

dont be worried yet, especially if oil water and coolant seem fine

Classic stuck stat symptoms....not to be a job to change on the diesel.

Ask The Boy, hes an expert now.... ::)

I'm not at the "Whaaa...Wassappenin ?" stage...yet.
I just thought that after a good 15 mins of driving it should have shown some movement.  After another 10 mins at 60mph and yet more stop-start it was only just getting up to the 1/4 point on the guage.

How much is a stat for a 2.6 V6? And is it a "bit of a swine" or "total so-and-so" to change?

I've had my 3.0 two and a half years, this last three days it has taken an age for the temp to get anywhere 90 degrees (15 or so mins). Never been like this previously. And from what I can eliminate myself seems to point th thermostat. There is nothing i am missing before getting this investigated propperly?

Ok this has been asked before on here, and the answer I can give is it seems normal on the 2.5TD
That's what mine does, I travel around 4 miles each evening to work and the temp gauge hardly moves in winter after this sort of distance. When fully warm it sits at around 80-85. I do journeys of around 100 miles with or without a caravan in tow and never has it really gone above 90 on the  temp gauge. I could be wrong but I think mine's working ok, unless someone else knows better than me.

stat is tired and opening to early i.e as markdtm says classic failed stat symptom, even in this weather my gauge starts to move after 1 mile of driving 4 mins or so and is up to temp 90 after 3 miles,

Yep,  things point to a dodgy T/stat. Not to cold this morning and after 15 mins of 60mph I free wheeled the last few 100yds or so and the temp guage dropped to just above the zero.

My TD gets to above 90 on the gauge before I leave town (and Brackley is very small!) - about 1.5 miles.  It has a new stat in.

Assuming the stupidly ridiculus viscous fan comes off easy (and don't bet it will  >:(), its a 10 min job:

Remove Turbo Diesel plastic.
Remove Viscous fan
Remove fan shroud
Pop off top of bottom hose
Undo 3 bolts holding on stat housing, and remove stat housing.
"Refit is reverse procedure"

Oh pants !!!  Darned thing wouldn't move when I changed the aircon condensor rad thingy.  Can it be done without taking off the viscous fan ?

should read 82 - 85, not 95, cant edit post tho!
