Help! Engine management light on - DTi Elite
« on: 15 November 2007, 09:35:26 »

I've had the EML on a few times since I bought the car, staying on for no more than a minute, sometimes just for 10 seconds. Sometimes it would go out if I stopped and then re-started the car, sometimes it wouldn't and would just go out of its own accord later. I didn't think anything of it and put it down to the car getting hot or something.

Late last night, while driving along the motorway, it came on and stayed on for about 2 minutes and has been randomly coming on for a minute or two since. When it is on, it has obviously gone into the 'limp mode' as there is very little power available. There seems to be a slight correspondence between slowing in traffic and the light coming on, but it is by no means repeatable - it's just an impression. Last night it was coming on for 30 seconds or so even when doing a steady '70 mph' ;)

I thought I could do the paperclip test but having searched on here, my car is too new for that. Vauxhall want £40 to diagnose it just by plugging the car in, so I'm looking for suggestions of what to check first before I go down that route.

There is very little written on here about the DTi engine, so I'm at a loss at the moment.

99% of the time the light is off and the engine is running fine. There's no smoke, no rough idling, no loss of electrical power, the engine doesn't die - the light just comes on and the engine seems like a non-turbo.

Help!

Also, does anyone know of a good alternative to Vauxhall in the Yeovil area to diagnose the problem if it's not something silly like a loose connection somewhere?

Cheers,

Graham

You dont get to many problems with the DTi.....given the time the light is coming on I would guess at a sticking EGR setup (remove and clean with paint stripper) but, it realy needs the codes reading adn some live actuator tests to confirm.

Excuse my ignorance but what is an EGR?

Is removing and cleaning something a novice can do?

So you reckon I should just get it into Vauxhall and have the codes read? It seems £40 is actually not a bad price compared to other diagnostic companies. I'm cynical about main dealers so how can I make sure that I'm not fed a load of crap about expensive work needing doing.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. Of course a novice can clean it out.

:-?How can you own a TVR wthout knowing a bit under the bonnet of a car?  :-?  ;D

Oh, just to make sure I've got it right, it's the light that looks like an engine that comes on, to the right of the ABS light. It doesn't call it an EML in the manual but that's what I'd call it.  :)

Andy B..... I have a brother and a TVR specialist to sort out the problems with that one  :y

Is the EGR on the diesel in the same place as on the 2.2 petrol? There is a guide on here for cleaning the EGR on one of those.

seems to suggest that the EGR isn't used when the throttle is wide open or at idle. My EML stays on even at idle and wide open throttle positions, so does that rule out the EGR being a problem?

Have spoken to a vauxhall dealer and they want a £100 pot to read the fault code and diagnose the problem up to that £100. Bloke reckoned they wouldn't clean the EGR but replace it if that was the problem, as it would likely fail again in a few months time. Sounds like BS to sting me for lots of cash?

They operate very differently on a diesel....generaly only closed when at Wide Open Throttle (if a diesel had a throttle that is!)

Have you given it a good thrashing first of all? They do get pretty choked up. Does the the engine feel restricted all the time?

EGR valve is uder the EcoTec plastic cover on top of the inlet manifold and is actuated via the vacuum unit next to the power steering reservoir. Cover off, disconnect vacuum hose, undo the two bolts and lift clear. Cleaning was done with a fine wire brush and the seat in the manifold wiped out with a cloth and if required a quick un round with some wet and dry just clear any hard build up. There is a fair bit of oil in the air flow so not unexpected that it gets mucky.

When the EML comes on does the rev counter drop to zero as well, as was happening to mine recently? If it does it could be the crank sensor as changing out mine has done the trick and so far there has been no sign of any problems (I guess that's that jinxed now) but as Mark says you need to get the codes checked. All I sugest following my scan s have a think and ask questions as the first place I had the scan done said it required a new pump because the fault referenced the pump control unit, big difference between £45 for a crank sensor and hundreds for a pump.

Had similar on mine! light would stay on when started from cold and go out after 20 seconds or so, also came on during driving for short periods.  I read somewhere that (maybe here) that it indicates among other things faulty glow plugs. Anyway replaced the glow plugs (needed doing anyway) and I have not had the light come on since  :y (before someone says, yes it does come on before starting  ;))
