Please - can anybody help??
« on: 23 November 2007, 10:50:35 »

I recently posted about an Aux Belt that shredded...

Firstly can I thank the many of you that read the post and to those of you who kindly replied..

If you're reading this for the first time let me recap (sorry to those who've heard this before) :

MV6 3.0l auto, traveling at about 30/40, loss of steering etc,etc stopped immediately. Aux belt tensioner failed - shredding Aux Belt!
Towed to nearby garage (good chap - but no knowledge of Omegas).

Engine runs (without Aux Belt) but with mechanical noise from the engine. Cam belt is intact but he suspects it may have jumped teeth. (suspects the worst??)

I'm reluctant to loose this vehicle as it's in good condition and I've started to change bits and pieces like exhausts and discs etc. It's only done 84K, cam belt was changed at 47k and is due shortly, but otherwise ok!

The purpose of this post is to ask the many of you out there who have so much knowledge of these things : "What do I do next??"

Do I just suspect the worst and scrap it?
I have asked and can't find a local specialist for Omegas.
I can't afford Main dealer prices this side of Xmas!!

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to lend a helping hand? Even if it was just to come and have a look and tell me the bad news!! In the last resort I could possibly arrange a trailer and bring it somewhere...

The vehicle is in SE Wales just north of Newport - easy access from M4 or M50..

.. but please.. could one of you help??

NICK

All was very quiet before shredding..

There was much shredding of Aux Belt!! He thinks debris got into cam belt and caused teeth to jump?? Of course it's possible for the Cam Tensioner to be faulty now as well!!

I had the cam belt slip on my Omega which resulted in a lot of mechanical noise, still ran ok though, no warning lights and it idled fine, just really really noisy, had the belt and tensioners replaced and it was fine.

its a gamble but before scrapping it I would think about changing the belts and tensioners, make sure its all timed up properly and if your lucky it'll be ok :y

Thanks for that good news Colalowe..   :)

Maybe it would be possible to realign the existing belt before the expense of the kit??

Now I need to find someone who is willing to look at it!!

Well given that you suspect no more damage can be done and you are perhaps considering scrapping it, why not perhaps try the above as suggested by Cola, AFTER a better diagnosis.

AS you probably know there is a DVD tutorial guide for fitting cambelt and tools are also available so it's got to be worth perhaps having a go? The cost of parts is detailed in other cambelt threads and trailers are around £25 to hire. Got to be worth a punt.

If you buy a cambelt kit and borrow an alignment tool you could strip it down to the cambelt and see if the alignment is out.

It will be obvious because the cam locks won't fit properly.

If the alignment is out you could adjust it back and see how the engine runs before fitting the new kit. If it's not the cambelt and you decide to give up on the car you could either take the cambelt kit back or sell it (on here or on Ebay).

What's the noise like? A water pump sounds horribly rumbly and screechy - but that only turns when the aux belt is on. If it was the water pump that could have caused the aux belt to come off in the first place.

.. looks like I might have to try this myself ....

"aaahhhhh nooooo!!" - you hear my car scream "you know nothing about me". "please don't touch me!!"

I'm going to order the DVD, and try to source the tools... could anyone tell me where I can rent the locking kit??

If I strip the cover off the belt can I see how many teeth the belt has slipped, or is it more complicated than that??

Is this a very silly thing I'm trying to do???  - or is it just a bonding process that every owner needs to go through??
