What engine?  If a V6, usual culprit is the heater bypass valve, shows as a leak on drivers side of the gearbox bellhousing.....

Welcome to the forum, by the way....   :y

And the V6 engines don't like plain water without the antifreeze.  Remember, 'antifreeze' serves more purposes than just reducing freeze temps.  Its an anti corrosive additive as well as a 'water wetter' to allow better cooling transfer, to name just 2...  The bonus you may well have in your leaky machine is that its filled and refilled with soft Scots water rather than the limescale inducing stuff thats the norm in some other parts of the country.....  ;)

coolant bridge and HBV are pretty easy things to do, the trick is to take your time.

Coolant bridge requires more to be stripped out, but then at the most it is about 20 bolts and you are down at that level, take your time, make sure eveything is claen when putting it back together and 9 out of 10 times you have sucsess

HBV is more about geting into small places, if you have big hands that can be a disadvantage

NO modern engine can tolerate running without anti freeze.....lets just hope that nothing has corroded through and that it is as simple as the bypass valve.

Buy new, second hand ones have a habit of stripping the thread (if buying second hand, the cooler must be removed from the plate so you can see if this has happened).

Antifreeze is very important as it has an anti corrosive additives (water is pretty corrosive) to stop long term damage as well as anti freezing properties.
