2.0Ltr GLS packed up - no spark - Grrrrrr
« on: 16 December 2007, 20:45:44 »

I've just got in from an "invigorating" hour with my omega.... invigorating because I've been pushing the ****** thing!  >:(

Everything was fine (I'd done over an hundred miles in it today) until I nipped out and it packed (cut out) up on me as I pulled up to a stop at a T junction. It was turning over ok but after a bit of investigation, it was obvious there was not spark - my brother pulled a plug lead off and attached a new plug but there was no spark when I turned it over. Arrggghhh! Fantastic!

My brother said it could be the crank sensor, timing sensor, or coil pack....

Is there any tests I can do to narrow it down? How much should I expect to pay to it working again if it is the crank sensor - they seem a common thing to go wrong.

Am I to expect this kind of reliability from an Omega? I've always had Jap cars in the passed and whilst they might not be the most interesting of motors, they keep going and going and going. I've only had the car 2 weeks (I was given it) and although I like driving it, I'm not very enamoured by the reliability.

Cheers

An annoyed TGG.

Sounds to me like either the crank sensor or the cam sensor, unusual for a coil pack to just totaly die with out playing up before hand.
If it can't get a signal from the crank or cam sensor then it won't power up the coil pack there for u wont get a spark..  :y

yep just gone through this senario myself, I would go to the CPS and change it, Its the most likely cause, this is the third one on mine from new (may2000) which is pretty crap to be honest, but the rest of the car makes up for it... :y easy to replace 1/2 hour job

Cheers Biker  :)

I feel slightly better, but why GM haven't fixed this, I don't know? My brother has had just about every sensor possible changed on his 1998 Vectra due to failure of some kind. Although the car has a full service history, (my parents were it's second owner @ 40k) I don't have allot of confidence on the car. I'm sure they've spent loads on it in the 4 years they've had it and I can do without this hassle especially when I sold my perfectly good Mazda 626 when they gave me the motor. I may sound ungrateful, but I'm not. I just don't want to have to keep forking out on it. I'm one of those guys that like to do my own regular servicing and keep cost as low as possible - especially when fuel etc is sooooo expensive these days.#

I've got the Auto Electrician coming round tomorrow to have a look. If it's going to be more than a couple hundred quid, expect a low mileage 2001 2.0ltr GLS Estate to appear on here for sale!  :o

Cheers.

MY 2.0 would run without the crank sensor plugged in. Yes, really, it would.

And (I guess) the cam sensor would just rev limit at 4k?

If yours is a facelift model, then the paperclip test won't work, and its unlikely that the electrician will have a Tech 2, which you really need to check it out. What do the lights on the dash say ?, is the imobiliser light flashing ?.

Im betting it's crank position sensor with out that it wont power up the coil pack, keep us informed and don't sell it just yet after this it may go for years and years with no hassle....  :D

Thats the same as my 2.2........unplug the crank sensor........it struggles to start but it does and may put it limp mode......didnt test for this.
Cam sensor unplugged/faulty puts it in limp mode........so yes rev limits to 4k.

TB has seen it do it.....but i thought it these senarios were limited to a 2.2......interesting a 2.0 does the same.

The 2L can run without either cam or crank sensor, but both sensors knackered would inhibit engine starting. Try paper clipping as suggested.

Only two sensors that cause trouble on the 2.0....cam sensor and crank sensor and reality they both last for 5-6 years.

Just to clarify some points....

All Omega 2.0/2.5/3.0 CAN be paperclipped. Only DBW units can't. If you can paperclip your ECU, do so - much cheaper than getting codes read ;)

2.0/2.2 will 'run' without crank sensor. Badly, and a pig to start, but will run. V6 won't run without correct signal from crank sensor.

I use to have a 2.0 and my first lemon (garage pressure washed engine) had the 4000rpm limi and also kept cutting out - then restarting after a while.

Do the paperclip test. All cars will have some sensor problems as they get older.

Even though it is full of electronics there is not that much to go wrong really.

Crank sensor - on the V6s it is the cable - this stops a V6 dead. This tells the ECU the engine is running.

Cam sensor - rev limits all engines, this tells the ECU which stroke it is on if you like, this is so it knows when to inject fuel accurately and if it fails there is a fail over mode - which rev limits. It injects all at once - every 2 revs.

The DIS uses wasted spark on some engines, so on each rev 1&4 then 2&3 are fired. The prefacelift V6s definately are wasted spark - I think the DBWs are not.

The Auto electrician dude has had a look. It wouldn't start to begin with but when he put his meter on the coil and try to start it again, it fired up ???? He checked for recorded fault codes, but there were none. There's also no engine management lights lit on the dash. ???

It's been ran about 25 miles with not problems but I'm not that confident it won't happen again.

It's been recommended I replace the plug and HT leads as they look a little tatty, but I think that's unrelated to my original problem.

Has anyone had something similar happen to them?

Cheers

TGG.
