Wipers thumping !
« on: 13 December 2007, 19:44:56 »

My wipers sometimes make an annoying thump at each end of their travel. It doesnt seem to make any difference if the screen is really wet or its just a bit of drizzle, it just sometimes does it and its really annoying. Not speed related either, can happen when sitting still or when moving. Is it just a case of new wiper blades needed or does something need lubricating ?

Cheers

Try new blades first, this is the cheapest option. If the noise is still there then i would suggest it is wear in the wiper arm system.

Wiper blades are the most likely cause as the rubber hardens with time but check the following:

Stop the wipers at mid travel (switch ign off) and check that the blades are perpendicular to the screen, I have seen several cars where the wiper arm is bent near the pivot which allows the spoiler to contact the glass. I think this is caused when struggling to remove the wiper arms and opening the bonnet with the arms raised or closing the bonnet when the arms were raised under the open bonnet....if you see what I mean. Bent arms can be straightened in a vice or using two adjustable spanners if still fitted to the car but be careful not to put any force through the spindle.

Another source of clunks and thumps are loose mountings, remove the wiper arms and scuttle then check all the fixing bolts are tight, they can work loose.

If the wipers have been removed at some point (likely) they may not have been put back on the spindles correctly.

When parked roughly horizontal they can wipe too far and hit the A-pillar.

To fix loosen off (13mm spanner) lift off and position a bit lower when parked.

As JasonH suggests.....

Blades not aligned to park postion correctly....

Remove, realign and replace....

I reckon its got to be the wiper blades needing replacing. The sweep is correct, the blades dont hit anything at either end of the travel. Cheers for the ideas, I'll try the new blades see how I get on.
