It's packed up again  :-? 2.0ltr 2001 GLS Est
« on: 21 December 2007, 10:22:29 »

Heeeeeeeelp!

It packed up again last night this time on the misses.

I went out to it with my mate to tow it back but it started up again. I managed to drive it about 5 miles before it cut out again. Then it started again and it ran for another 5 miles before it packed up again. It then started again and I manged to get it to my mates house. I got to bed at 1am very cold and thoroughly naffed off.

Anyway, when I first got to it, I took out a plug (when looked brand new) and turned it over and there was a very good spark - it also tried to start -I put the plug back in and away it went. The auto electrician that looked at it last week said it might be the temp sensor telling the ECU its too cold and dumping a load of fuel into it which is cause it to flood. I'm not too sure because the plug I took out was bone dry even when it packed up the second time last night.

I'm thinking it's a fuel supply problem i.e. it's not getting any. I'm thinking this because when it packed up the second time, I was doing about 40mph when it lost all power and it was just slowing down when it spluttered and then fired up again. I ran for about another 200 meters - but very lumpy then stopped altogether. My mate who was following me said it stunk of eggs (cat problem??) but when it started again, it felt and smelt fine.  :-[

Anyone any suggestions? The EMI is still not lit, only when you turn the ignition on.

Cheers.

TGG.

do a paper clip test to get the fault codes, sounds like a cam sensor problem.

Does the car with the spanner light though it come on the dash?

Agree a sensor fault looks likely. However, it might just be worth checking for a fuel supply problem if that doesn't help. Could be a clogged fuel filter or faulty fuel pump / fuel pump relay perhaps?

Cheers lads.

There's no EML on at all. The auto electrician checked the ECU and there were no fault codes stored. He also tested the crank sensor (I don't know how - I wasn't there) and he said it checked out OK.

I'll try the paperclip test anyway.

This sounds like a rubbish design if it is the cam sensor, a real weak spot for what should be a really nice motor.

Cheers

 Hi Tunnie,

I'm just outside Leicester.

I've just been reading about the paper clip test according to the blurb, you can't do it on my 2001 facelift model  :(

Cheers

PS How much are Cam and Crank sensors?

I think you can do it on all 2.0L models. It's the Facelift in 2.2L
guise that you can't.

Don't forget to do it with ignition on, but engine NOT running, on
your car.

Even though it's a new shape 'facelifted' car, your 2.0ltr engine is still the same unit used in the prefacelift cars so it should work ok, fingers crossed. It is the 2.2, 2.6, 3.2 cars that don't support the test feature  :y

The crank sensor should be P/N 9174621, which is only £15 from ebay. Cam sensors come in different prizes, the cheapest ones doesn't necessarily work. If you have a scrapper near by, it's a nice place to get a cheap working one.

As long as its the 2.0 and not 2.2, yes you can! Does not matter if its a facelift or not....

Coooool!

Thanks for all the replies!  ;D

I've been given a price of £70 for both the cam and crank sensors.

It seems to do it when it's warm. The first time it happened, I had been to Birmingham and back (100 miles) and it was fine. I jumped into it about an hour or two later and got a mile down the road! This time it was warm (done 15 miles - stopped for two hours then drove home and 10mins in it packed up)

My mate and I are going to change the cam and crank sensors over xmas - great  :-[

Cheers
