TODAY IS THE DAY
« on: 22 December 2007, 08:29:23 »

Gonna go into work in a mo and make a start on my v6 exhaust manifold gaskets, not a job im looking forward to i must say but at the mo she sounds like a tractor with no soot pipe lol ....
Plenty of heat, split knuckles and blood and i should pull it off..

Any body else done the gaskets on the v6 with out taking the engine out or cylinder head off ?

driver side (UK) more easy (10 hours for me and a friend as we are considered amateurs and little slow) the other side  really worse..

problem is the gasket and manifold is behind a hose coming from the radiator going backside of the engine..

But its not a heads out job..

edit:

also I must say the manifold screws and nuts must be worked carefully as they can be broken easily..

and the hose if you take out (we couldnt find a better way) must be isolated properly or you will start loosing coolant..

and original vx metal gasket must be used..Others fail quickly (mine also did  :()

Had major problems today...

Some one kindly used chemical metal to hold the manifold in place and stop it from blowing... some 7 hours later i got all 7 bolts out with out any breaking, had to remove loads of stuff to even get near it including that hose i just removed the whole hose so good time for a coolant change...
Gonna finish her off on monday as i need a egr pipe as some one bent mine in half and also used chemical metal to hold that in place..

U brave brave man, i tell ya i had a gut full today after doing all that, i think i would have gave up if i had to do it on the floor in the cold bugger that lol ...

If i didn't have that chemical metal all over the manifold and bent egr pipes i reakon i could have had it done today but it sure is alot of work..
the whole car is mint appart from the exhaust blow, really makes you wonder why they just bodged this where the rest is mint body work and inside are like new totaly mint... Just dont get it maybe a quick bodge to sell but it was advertised with the manifold blowing so i dunno ???  :o

When you say EGR pipe, I thought we were talking passenger side?

EGR should only be on drivers side - do you mean the Sec air injection pipes? These are held to the manifolds with 2 little torx bolts...

Yeah sorry that one mate, like a long pipe held in with 2 bolts and has 2 pipes going into one pipe, for some reason mines kinked in half and my altinaton chopped through my vac hose so go a few little issues to sort out but shud be back on the road before x mas.... ;) ;) :o :o

Gotcha...

If the Sec air injection discussed above causes problems, block it off and unplug the pump :y

I think it might be because Vauxhall charge 5.5 hours labour for this, and if there are problems such as snapped bolts you have to pay the additional labour. I know what you mean though... I've found loads of bits on my car that have been broken and bodged - for example, the rear bumber support was brokenso they glued a rubber strap to hold the bumper rather than just buy the bracket for £6 !!!

Well done though, I hope you get finished with no more problems.

Yeah thats the pipe mate, has 2 out lets on the top of the manifold where 2 small pipes bolt in and go into one then it goes off to the front of the engine and joins to this funny looking silver pump thing..
That pipe is bent and is gonna cost me 45 quid to replace, you say just blank it off and un plug the pump ????

Is this safe and how do i do it.... cheers chaps...
