awful noise under braking
« on: 28 December 2007, 20:18:58 »

Getting a nasty noise from front of car under braking. Sounds like a griding noise.

I've looked at the disks and pads, which appear absolutely fine with plenty of meat.

I'm unsure of their make - should I just replace with GM stuff?

Mine make a grinding noise usually....sometimes squeak as well.....

Mine have gen vx pads and disks and have plenty of wear left too........they started to make the noises after about 10k miles of changing em.....

MDTM reckons its cause the taper on the leading and trailing edges on the pads have worn away......and filing new ones will cure it........ive never got round to it  :-[

So you could give that a whirl.....  :y

possibly dirt on either surface, had that in past not in Omega though, jet wash cleared it.

True,....could be grit inbetween the pads and discs.......i did try taking mine off a while ago and cleaning em using brake cleaner........it made no difference  :(

I am on my third disc&pads set (all Vx) and never had grinding noise. But the vibration when braking at Motorway speed is back...  :(

Remove the pads and check for embedded stones.

Put a new chamfer on the leading/trailing edges.

Coppaslip the rears (as you do.....)

And I sometimes use an angle grinder on the inner/outer edges of any wear lip on the disc itself to ensure the actual wear surfaces of the pads meet true to the disc surface.  If you do it nicely, the rotation of the grinder also rotates the disc and takes it down nice and even.

Works fine for me.....
