Replacing the cam and crank sensor?
« on: 21 December 2007, 15:16:48 »

Hello!

I've had a look around but I can't find a guide on how to change the cam and crank sensors on my 2001 2.0ltr estate. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm going to be getting cold tonight in my mates garage  :'(

Cheers

TGG,

Its worth getting a Haynes book IMHO. Even though it only in theory covers up to 1999,  90% of the stuff is still applicable to your car, including the engine. (its only really the body work and associated electrics that are different)

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Judging by it's performance so far, I think I your right, I better get a Haynes manual  ::) Or sell it!

Cheers.

Cam sensor: Remove cambelt cover and spark plug cover. Undo torx bolt from the cambelt side and remove the sensor from the spark plug side. Refitting is reverse of removal unless you buy a sensor with new wiring.

Crank sensor: I guess you have AC? Very easy without AC. Just follow the wire down the side of the engine by the cambelt cover. It is fitted into the engine block at the underside at the (UK) passenger side. Easily seen from underneath if you don't have AC, but almost impossible to route the the sensor wiring in the same fashion as original. It's just a matter of being creative and avoid the exhaust manifold.
Others have done on cars with AC, should be able to find it here. There are som different techniques that people prefer.

You won't be able to see your Crank Sensor. To find it, put your hand
on the Oil Dipstick Tube. Run your hand down it until you feel where
it enters the Crankcase. Feel forward, towards the front of the engine,
about 2", and you'll feel the single mounting bolt and then the sensor.

The cable from the sensor runs up behind the power steering pump, following
the passenger side of your Cambelt Cover. It runs over the top of the Cambelt
cover, past the Cam sensor (mounted at the top of the Cambelt Cover) and then
connects to a plug near your Alternator.

If you don't have air con then you'll change it fairly easily. If you do, there are various
methods.
I removed the Exhaust Heatshield for better access, and changed it blind, by touch,
with my legs waving in the air.  ;D

'Vectrolysis' removed the left hand engine mount and did from underneath..

'Taxi Driver' did his by unbolting the Oil dipstick tube and pulling it out (push fit),
and did his from the top.

If I was doing it again, now that I know that the Dipstick Tube is a push fit, I would
use 'Taxi Driver's' method.

The socket for the Crank Sensor mounting bolt is the same size as the one for removing
the Exhaust Heatshield Bolts. This will save you fishing around, blind, trying to find
the correct size. If you remove the Oil Dipstick Tube, don't forget to block it off
to save dropping your Bolt down it and into the Crankcase!!
