power steering probems and others
« on: 20 December 2007, 16:12:14 »

Hey guys,

Merry Christmas to you all! ;D

Now to my problem, some times my power steering feels lumpy could this just be old fluid, (I Hope!) I cannot see any leaking when using the steering from the pump and also feels like if I revv the car a little it eases the steering a bit.

Now to my second problem the alarm,
it keeps going off whenever it feels like it before i go to bed I unlock the car push the alarm button to stop the sensors and relock the car this solve the problem till 5/6/7 in the morning when that switch re-arms again, and then the alarm goes off, I have tried several solutions mentioned in this forum that switch being one, the bonnet switch disabled, removed the power sounder it is sitting in front of me as I type and the alarm is still going off, he only thing i can do is also remove the alarm horn itself but the indacaters still flash and dont stop, and i dont want to wake up to a flat battery.

any other ideas guys.

Many thanks in advance.

Power steering could be the pump on its' way out. It's got plenty of fluid in, I assume?

Might also be worth checking the fuse in case that's blown. No problems with the ABS? Speedo working OK? Speed sensitive steering relies on the speedo signal from the ABS and it can go heavy if that fails.

Regarding the alarm try disconnecting the wire from the underbonnet switch. Sometimes that causes false triggering. The sensors don't re-arm once they've been disabled using the button AFAIK. Failing that, disconnedt the power sounder under the scuttle panel, driver's side just behind the suspension turret. These are notorious for failing and causing the alarm to go off. Do a search on here and you'll find plenty of info.

Hi Don

I had a similar problem with my Estate so I disconnected the alarm sounder which meant the lights would be flashing all the time resulting in a flat battery. Because I was constantly useing jump leads the battery packed up all together very quickly so I bought a new battery and the alarm hasn't gone off since. Now im not saying go out and buy a new battery, but have you got a battery off another car you could try.

Thanks for the responses, fluid looks full but it nly just reaches the bottem of the lid stalk maybe i do not have enough where is the miniumim on the power steering, everything else works fine,
abs is working fine, speedo works fine, i just thought as smetimes it feels like it hits a lump but if you turn over it is fine only happens oocasionaly,

now alarm bonnet switch is removed, power suonder is removed the only reason why i thought switch was re amring was because it seems to delay the alarm going for a longer time but it still seems random,

I dont have another battery to test but i have tested mine by seeing if the voltage drops over a period of time but there are no significant changes, to the ampege or voltage.

any other ideas.

Alarm used to go off on my Omega and my wifes Astra, both in the middle of the night. Replaced batteries on both cars and no more alarms. Actually it took a couple of days to totally solve the problem.

The wifes old battery, I hate to throw anything away, is still sat in the garage and when you check the voltage with a multimeter it still reads over 12 volts and that is four months after it was changed.

As Pete says, if you can lay your hands on another battery and stick it on for a couple of days you will eliminate one possible cause.
