2.6 Can anyone help me?
« on: 25 December 2007, 20:17:03 »

Ive done senators and ive had 3.0 auto omegas but im looking for a change and ive found a 2.6 manual omega cd on 2001 plate.

What are the engines like for power and reliability?,
i cant seem to find any details anywhere but in my opinion the 2.5 engines were terrible , i work at a breakers and get asked for these engines and heads all the time , im wondering is the 2.6 gonna be the same thing.

thanks in advance
richard.

2.6 manual should be a good mix of power and economy.  The manual box will give you a bit more economy in town compared to the auto.  I find the manual box a bit clunky (did improve after an oil change) but this is minor really (still better than most FWDs)

If you are interested in a manual then it is a 2.6 unless you want an ex-plod 3.2

Not sure why you have the impression that the 2.5 is unreliable, they should be as robust at the 3.0.  Often an oil cooler failure is mis diagnosed as a head gasket failure: that could be why lots of people are after relacement engines.

Good luck

The 2.5 is a VERY reliable lump, as is the 3.0. The 2.0, whilst underpowered, is also a very strong engine. The key to keeping them all alive is 3k oil changes...

3k is a tad extreme, but its what i have been doing. It depends on the millage you do, if its heavy town stuff like me, then 3k, is enough. But longer motormiles and it can be longer.

5k oil changes are the norm i'd say, at the end of the day it costs me less than £10 to do an oil change, with geniune GM filter and oil! So a change every 3k is nothing!

Totally agree, and by the way Omega everytime, depends on how much you cherish and look after the car depends on how much rust appears, if any.

Mate 3 k oil changes is a tad steep i'd say every 5k as long as you use a good oil..

Don't know where you heard about the 2.5 being crap, i've had three 2.5's and two 3.0's and all of them have been fine..

Like some one else pointed out, a faulty oil cooler goes and every one thinks it's head gasket gone so alot end up scrapped for no good reason..
Ive had my 3.0 elite now for 2 weeks and it is a absolute corker of a car and you can pick them up for peanuts mines a auto which is a little thirsty round town and short trips so a manual would be alot better for fuel eco...  :y

Not sure I agree - With the 4 for 3 offer on genuine VX oil, an oil change is going to cost around a tenner.

If you do say 1000 miles a month, and do 3k oil changes, that's £10 every three months.

That's only £40 per year, for the single most important peice of maintenance you can ever give your engine  :y
