Wheel camber not right...EAting inside of tyres!!
« on: 03 January 2008, 20:26:22 »

HI there..im new to forum but hopefully someone out there can give me some advice...my 96 omega estate 2.0ltr has a developed a very worrying sharp pull to left/right under heavy braking....but worse still i happened to check inside of tires yeaterday and found they had worn down to wire on very inner edge even though rest of tire is like new.....stepping back from car with wheels straight there is a noticable angle on both wheels..explaining why tire are running on inner edge...problem is i cant seem to find any real prob...wishbones seem ok,little bit of play but very little...brakes fine, callipers etc.cant get booked into garage till next week but after putting on brand new tires dont really fancy leaving it too long before repairing fault!
so what im basically waffling on about is has anyone had same experience or any idea on whta could cause this?
thankyou in advance! ;)

See http://wheels-inmotion.co.uk

If you are near to him, highly recommended, as understands what the Omega needs (rather than just getting in 'in spec').  If you do use him, be sure to mention this forum and that TheBoy sent you for a capped price :y

Sorted my car with the same problem, well worth the trip even if it might be a long way for you, most garages will adjust it to spec settings but that will not sort the problem and tyres are too expensive to keep wasting every few thou miles. ::)

I know it's a long trip but i would consider the journey worth it as you need it sorted first time so give it some thought.  Gary. ::)

The front camber is adjustable but is unlikely to have moved unless someone has changed front struts and not re-set the camber properly.
It is most likely that the wishbone front bush has gone soft or split (they are fluid filled), this causes excessive front camber and steering instability.
This problem has already cost you a pair of tyres, I suggest you fit new wishbones (try ebay) then take it somewhere for a full geometry check and adjustment...not just 4 wheel alignment. WIM is highly reccomended but ask Tony at WIM if there is a place nearer to you that he trusts.

Bassetts Auto Repair Centre in Swansea did mine two weeks ago.

The basic Geometric set up costs about 55 squid +VAT.

They spent about an hour freeing up the rear adjusters on my car as they were absolutely solid and seeing as it was the mid afternoon on the friday b4 crimbo, I didn't have much hope of getting replacement items...and they are a "Main Stealer" item only...no pattern parts (...Ooh Nooo !!!)
Fair play to them, they kept on it and and got 'em moving freely so they could get the set up done.
Car felt spot on...well...until an argument with an unlit traffic island on crimbo eve...Doh !!
