Excessive air pressure in the inlet of a turbocharged or supercharged engine, due to failure of the control mechanism (usually a wastegate on a Turbo, which allows exhaust gases to bypass the turbine stage).

SWMBO's Focus has an overboost function built into the control system which is activated when the accelerator is hard to the floor. Designed to assist when overtaking etc semingly but in this case it must be about burnt out ;D.
