Whining from rear!
« on: 13 January 2008, 11:18:26 »

Hi folks.
I'm new to this so hope it's ok.
I had been planning to take my 53 plate petrol 2.2CD Auto into Vx for a main service, cambelt and exhaust manifold gasket when I started to notice a high pitched whining noise from the rear passenger side corner when going round tight mini roundabouts or multi storey car park ramps and seemed more noticeable with body roll. Then I noticed the same thing when accelerating hard out of full size roundabouts or tight right hand bends in the lower gears. The sound is gradually happening more often and easier to duplicate and seems to last longer when holding second gear and will also continue in a straight line whilst accelerating. The sound is similar to a high pitched spinning top type toy and "spools up" with acceleration. The orange light with a spanner through it also comes on after a few miles but usually in slow moving traffic, the car does not go into limp home mode and drives as normal. I've had the car since 9 months old and 9000 miles and it's only up to 49k now. This is the lowest of all my Omegas.
Does anyone know if this is likely to something big as the bill at Vx is already hurting even at Masterfit prices. :-[
Thank you in advance.

Whining from the rear is usually the kids "Are we nearly there yet?" :D
Seriously, I'm sure that the experts on the Forum will have a diagnosis

Sounds like the rear wheel bearing is failing. Not the hardest job in the world.
Not sure how much Vx will charge though :-/

It does sound like a rear wheel bearing. The codes will have to be read to see why the light is coming on.

I'd avoid the main dealer and see if you can find a specialist or just a decent local garage. The 2.2 cambelt isn't as complex as the V6.

A service, cambelt and exhaust manifold gasket are relatively straightfoward but on the forum we've seen Vx dealers turn the manifold gasket into a massive and pricey job when they shear the studs then have to remove the head and sent it off to fix the problem.

The studs can shear but if you can find a garage that cares just a bit they may not shear the studs and the whole thing will be a lot quicker and cheaper.

If you need the wheel bearing done as well the total bill at Vx will be huge.

I'd try the best (recommended) garage for the service and cambelt. If they do a good job at a fair price then go for the other items.

There are (probably) some good Vauxhall service departments.  Yet to find one myself.

For a free cambelt change, see Meetings section ;)

Thank you for all the replies. I was worried that the whining might be the diff. Any ideas what I should expect to pay to have the wheel bearing done. I'm in the vicinity of Stevenage, Herts area and would appreciate any recommendations on garages to carry out the work. I was resigning myself to a big bill at Vauxhall.

Not all vauxhall dealers are bad when i do a job like that i take my time and the boses know this and don`t mind because the customers come back and i am often called sir slow but good in the workshop sadly i don`t make up the prices but the manager will do a deal when asked. :) ;)
speacialist and other garages aren`t always cheaper as they charge less per hour but more hours for the job!!! >:(

I avoid the local Vx dealer like the plague, but am lucky in that the Ormskirk main dealer has 2 (Yes 2!) blokes who are very good on most things and, (wait for it), very helpful. They also take the TC card.

Big_Mart,

From what you're saying, do you work for a Vx dealer, and if so which one?  Looking at your profile you might be local to me.
