My misfire has returned
« on: 01 February 2008, 06:19:10 »

Driving to work this morning and the car started misfiring quite badly yet again.

I had a big problem with this all through december and thought i'd finally got it sorted just before christmas but lo and behold it's come back.

Car was fine when i started it but started to miss after 3 or 4 miles.  It was missing at idle as well as when it was being pushed hard.  Managed to coax it another miles or two in second and third gear only trying to keep the revs high and it then began to run almost normally although it would still miss if you floor it suddenly in 3rd or 4th gear.

In decmeber i changed DIS pack, plug leads, plugs and coolant temp sensor as it was throwing up a low voltage fault code.  I've paperclipped it already and there are no stored codes.

I'm now at my absolute wits end with this car as it's just one problem after another and it always seem to go when the weather is at it most cold and shittiest, never does it in the summer when it's a nice day.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to where to start looking for this current problem as i'm now stumped  >:(

If you've done everything on the HT side, then it sounds fuel related...

as its been ok for a while, worth retracing some earlier steps - eg oil in plug wells

could it be the crank sensor??

my car had similar problems and i remembered that when James 'The Boy' last looked at my car he suggested that my crank sensor might be on its way out, sure enough few months later the omega developed an intermitant miss fire which gradually got worse.

changed the crank sensor and shes like a new car again.   :y

He said he has checked for stored codes and nothing stored.

You're right of course, all V6 owners should paperclip (2/5/3.0) at least monthly, as that 19 doesn't bring on EML sadly.

Even more flummoxed now.  Just been brought home from work by the AA as the barge was so down on power it could barely make it up a particular hill.

AA guy had a quick look at the plugs and seemed to think it was running lean,  he asked me to try and drive it up the road with him following, i just about managed although couldnt get out of first gear.

I ened up being towed the 12 or so miles home, I had it in neutral with the engine running so that i still had power steering and it was missing most of the way home, however when i got the the bottom my road the engine was running absolutely spot on, no missfire at all,  I could even set off from a standstill in 3rd gear and it didn't miss once.

He suggested I have a look at the EGR and blank it off which i suppose makes sense.

Regarding the crank sensor, is there anyway to test them?  or is it a case of replace it and see what happens.

I have a week to sort it now, got the use of another car all next week so I just hope the weather improves a bit.

In my experience, problematic crank sensor stores a 19.  Occasionally, it breaks completely, but that wouldn't give your misfire problem.

I do believe i've sorted it.

Just been out to start the car again and it was all crappy and lumpy again.   Had a quick look under the bonnet and noticed a faint reddish stain on the passenger side cam cover.

The first sparkplug well has water in it and there is also a little bit in the second one.  It looks like the coolant hose is leaking on the side where it attaches to the throttle body as if i wiggle the hose i can get drops of water to come out.

Looks like another busy weekend :)

Could well be the problem .. wasted spark system will short out 2 pots if one is flooded, so rough runnng is exagerated

Hopefully an easy fix for you  :)
