Omega Ignition barrel change
« on: 03 May 2007, 20:55:18 »

Please can someone help.  I am trying to find out how to change the ignition barrel on the omega. I think it is a 94 model (M reg auto).  From what I can understand there is a hole in the chamber, but I can not find it to release the barrel.  Please Please help.  Direct me to the correct bit as I would very much like to have a car that did not look like it has been pinched. :-*

On the senny and carltons on which the Omega is based you do it the following way cant see any reason for vxhal to change it?

Original key has to be in the intermediate position then if you look underneath at teh back of the lock/barrel you will se a small hole put a small drill bit or rivet in there and press gently the barrel and lock wil slide out then replace with the new one!

:)On the side of the ignition body there is a hole.[about 1.5 -2-0mm]you need a drill bit to push into the hole to release the barrel..Use the key to pull the barrel out while the drill is in the hole

Actualy, an allen key is easier as a drill bit is to long tpog et around teh steering lock...

But yes, key in position II, look above the cente of the barrel just below the steering column and you will see a hole, allen key in and it releases the latch......then catch it as it often springs it out!  :o

Looked every where for this hole, but cannot see one.  Just to clarify that I am looking in correct place right side below steering column above key barrel.  Anyone have pictures?   :o

Its quite small , just above the barrel and I would guess from memory about an 2-3cm from the key end of the barrel.  Pushing an implement in to the hole releases a spring clip I think and with a bit of wriggling the barrel will pop out.

You have stripped off the plastic cover haven't you?

Yes I have taken the cover off  ;D  Did vauxhall change the ignition in 94?  I have been told they did and it is now a sealed unit? Is this wrong?

Hi Gwen,

I have done this job myself on my 94 Omega and it was as described by others in the thread.

Does the pic make sense to you?

Do you have a spare barrel that you are going to install?  If so if you hold it in the way that it will fit into the steering column housing there is a bit on the cyclindrical part of the barrel which pushes in a bit and is spring loaded.   Your nail/allen key or whatever goes through the hole and pushes in this latch which releases the barrel.

Looking at my old barrel (sad barsteward that I am I always keep these old parts) the latch is 4cm from the outer face of the barrel (where the key goes in).

May be worth posting what you need in the parts wanted/for sale section - someone is bound to be breaking at car, and may do you an entire lock set for a few quid ;)

Need to keep the existing transponders from your old keys though, so save getting them reprogrammed.
