Mayonaise in oil cap & price for cam cover gaskets
« on: 03 February 2008, 13:41:05 »

Hi Guys

I have just topped up my oil this morning and the filler neck and cap is covered in mayonaise type sludge. Please can someone advise what the problem might be.

The car needs the cam cover gaskets doing and breathers cleaned so I am presuming this is the cause ? Could someone also give me an idea of cost to get the cam cover gaskets changed (including parts) so I don't get ripped off. Is it best to get this done at Vaux or does it not matter ?

Cheers
Sharpey.

It's the other way around.. the mayo forming at the top of the engine is normal when the car is used mainly for short journeys. However, the same stuff also goes into the breathers and blocks them, causing pressure build-up that eventually breeches the cam cover gasket(s).

This is why the breather needs to be cleaned from time to time, and more so if the car is not regularly driven on motorways.

it also has to do with the oil itself, good quality oil and frequent changes will minimise the formation of mayo (though not eliminate it altogether). In theory fully-synthetic oils should be best for this purpose, however (my) experience shows that Vx own-brand oil causes the minimum amount of mayo - in my case I am getting less mayo with Vx 10W-40 semi-synth that I had while I was on Mobil-1 0W-40 full-synth...

As for the camcovers... it is best done DIY (had mine done 4 years ago by the dealer under warranty, but did it again myself in April last year). There is a very good guide in the Maintenance Guides section.

Reason is that there are few pitfalls that can cause the camcovers to leak again very quickly.

1. You must use original Vx gaskets (around £25 per head). Other makes may seem the same, but they will brittle and leak very quickly.

2. You must use Vx own-brand RTV sealant, and only in the places as described in the Maintenance Guide - using any other type of sealant, or not using sealant at all, or using the right sealant but all along the gasket and not just in the right places, will all cause the gaskets to leak again very quickly.

3. The camcovers must be evenly torqued to 8NM, or they will leak again....

Problem is many independent garages don't know these things, they think it is a straightforward gasket saap, and when the customer comes back with a fresh leak a couple of weeks later, their standard response is that the camcovers are 'warped' and new ones are needed... Wapred camcovers are very rare mainly because these are plastic units, and will only occur if the engine seriously overheated for a long period of time.

So in short best thing is DIY (then you know you got it right..), then independent, but only one that comes recommended and has proven he knows how to to the job, and last Vx dealers, on balance they are more likely to get the job done right (though not always!) but this will come at a price.

That's the black plastic bit with the Ecotec logo at the top of then engine... you disconnect all the vacuum pipes at the back and then take it off (need to undo 4 bolts to get the throttle body at the front away from the plenum), give it a thorough cleaning with carb cleaner. An air line will be handy... if it is very heavily covered in solid muck then you can consider buying a new one from the dealer rather than spend a couple of hours cleaning your old one.
