Cam Lock Kit
« on: 01 February 2008, 11:35:44 »

Hi all..

My MV6 shredded its auxiliary belt before xmas and the cam belt possibly jumped some teeth.. I'd like to check alignment before scrapping but can't get anyone who's prepared to look at it. I've bought the DVD from this site and may able to persuade someone to have a go if I can find a locking kit..

Please could someone let me know who would be willing to lend/rent/give/borrow/beg - (but absolutely not steal!) a cam locking kit for a 1999 3.0 MV6.

I have tried to PM without success - but I'm probably not doing this right!!

Many thanks to you all..

Sorry, mine not available until March, plus due to previous hassles, I have a minimum post count rule :(

May be worth stripping down to cambelt, then you can see visually if its dangerously out (though can't reset perfectly without the kit).

If its not far out, and it drives fine, see Cambelt Party thread in Meetings section ;)

I understand where you're coming from.. If someone abuses a helping hand then it screws it up for all decent people afterwards!!!   >:( >:(

Aux is off (shredded). Engine runs but very noisy. I don't fancy paying for belt and tensioner and risk driving it anywhere as it is..

If I strip it further (i.e. take cam belt cover off) is it easy to tell how far the alignment is out??

Its easy to tell if its 'near enough' to run - judge by eye when crank at tdc, and see how cam marks line up with backplate.  If its more than about 3 teeth out, then  :'(

clockwise

and you'll notice crank has 2 'flats' on it, these need to be vertical. The is a mark between one bolt hole and outside of crank (about 3mm wide), this needs to be pointing downwards.

... then look at the marks on all 4 wheels to make sure they are close to the marks on the casing? Or do you just look at left hand bank?

If within 3 teeth, probably worth investing in new bits, timed up perfectly

Thank you for that..  :)

I'll look at the DVD again and try to have a go at it this weekend.. I don't think I'll do too much damage by just doing what you have suggested.. fingers crossed for a good result!!

We are attacking this car on Saturday, seeing as Nick is only a stone throw from me. Hopefully it can be revived and there are no bent valves  ::)
