a few weeks back the EML came on driving on a dual carrigeway, didnt think anything of it. it happened a couple of times since. no codes stored and light only on for a couple of secs.

now, the car keeps dropping the revs really low, as if its about to stool. sometimes it does.

sat in traffic there is loads of white smoke from the exhaust (even though the engine is normal temperature. and it feels sort of spluttery & feels as though it is struggling to stay running.

driving at about 60mph, all of a sudden it will cut out then pick up again (EML came on once for about 15 seconds) just got it home but there are no codes stored.

the car has been loosing a small amount of coolant over the last couple of weeks, but not very much, there is lots of 'mayo' in the filler cap, but none on the dipstick, & no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.
Also, when driving back tonight (at about 60mph when it kept cutting out), even  though the climate control & fans where off, there was very hot heat coming through the vents (but engine at normal running temp, maybe just a bit above).

I dont even know where/what to look for first, if only it had stored a code! can anyone help or suggest?

ah not what i wanted to hear! had it checked at vaux last week, their blue test stuff (sorry for the technical term) didnt turn yellow!

first thing i would do is do a paperclip test and see what codes come back from that.

it will have stored the code and will do so until there have been either 10 or 20 turns of the key with no issues

lots of smoke cold be due to the ambient temp, mine is pumping it out currently, hot smoke, cold air.......

the mayo in the filler, that happens when it is cold and especially if the car is doing lots of short journeys, mine does that and i end up clearing it out, i would be more worried if it was in the header tank.

water loss could be HBV and thinking about it i wonder if the Dispack is being affected by this and shorting out hence the rough running

the codes i got were:
19 - crankshaft sensor
38 - oxygen sensor - low voltage
73 - air flow sensor - low voltage

can these be repaired/cleaned or whatever, or are they easy for me MR amateur to replace?

would these fault codes be causing the above symptoms?

Change cranksensor (19), which will likely cure 73 as well...

TBH Sounds a bit like the HBV...loss of water and heater issues...rather than head gasket...

The symptoms your getting could be as a result of the problems with the engine from the HBV failing and may not need a crankshaft sensor at all??

But I got the faulty crank sensor from EML codes.

well I changed crank sensor today and have done a few miles in it since-touch wood it seems to be fine, EML is off, codes are still there but apparently i need a few starts before it will reset.

While I had the scuttle off though, i looked at the HBV, on the large pipe on the nearside, there is what looks like orange bubbles coming out the end of the hose (without the engine running) there is a spring clip that is there and tight, and the hose is tight. Is this some form of sealant to seal the hose or could it be where coolant has been leaking out?

It looked dry all around the HBV and no signs of dried water trails
