Suspension replacement
« on: 04 February 2008, 18:28:06 »

I am interested in replacing the springs and shocks all round on my ex-police meega with standard items, does anybody know online shops that sell them.
Only places I can see are ebay which has both springs and shocks and also buypartsby which has KYB gas shocks but only lowering springs (which I don't want).
Also does anybody know what vauxhall charge for these items for a 1999 3.0 MV6. Although I am not bothered if they are not the "lowered" MV6 suspension units.

Cheers Karl

I used Spax (UK) and Eibach (Germany) on previous cars, I am sure they have a kit for the Omega... also Bilstien (Germany) and Koni (Netherlands) have kits for the Omega but these are likely to be dearer.

Do these kits lower the omega or are they the same ride height as standard, as I don't really want to lower it as I believe the ride becomes harsh? :-?

why would you want to change to a standard set up? the old bill suspension is much better and still comfortable. you should drive a standard one first, i think that you will be disapointed
i can may be able to get the part numbers if you want to get the originals

i would imagine you will only be able to get originals from dealers, aftermarket stuff is normally based around performance items

The police suspension setup imo seems to have a far "softer" feel which causes the car to have a serious amount of body roll when cornering (but not going excessively fast!). it just doesn't seem the correct setup for the car.

I have found the following on buypartsby:

KYB Excel-G shockd front and back for £52 each for the fronts and £15 each for the rears and also Lesjofors Lowering Spring Kit for £78. The lowering kit reduces the ride height by 40mm.
Does this seem right and are they any good??

I thought you said you did not want to lower the car?  :o

I realise now that i may have to, if i want to improve the setup I already have, given what has been said above about the police suspension being better than the standard setup.

Any ideas appreciated

KYB do make some excellent stuff, i have run their gas struts on modified cars i have built in the past and feel that the are underrated.

I'm surprised about the 'soft' suspension comment, my experience of the omega is that it is very well composed through the corners and that the suspension gives a good amount of feedback as well as to what's happening.

I suppose it goes back to what you are used to.

It may be becaus the car is being run on 16's rather than the 17's of a standard MV6.  The higher sidewall ratio tends to let the cars roll about a tad sometimes.....

good point, i have always said that for a big car it goes round corners at speed well and instills confidence...

Sister in law took mine out on the weekend and she said how easy it was to drive at legal limit without fuss

40mm drop on springs might be a bit much for a standard shock though....

I was used to driving a vectra 1.8 LS so it may be that I am still not used to the car, but there is in my opinion far to much body roll.
Is the police suspension different to the ordinary standard suspension?
I am just wondering if the previous owner had the shocks/springs replaced with the incorrect ones?

i got same thing with my mv6, back end was higher than front too so just had it lowered by 40mm (PI Springs). but its a bit drastic, still getting used to it. But no body roll.. :D

brought bump stops too but garage didnt fit them said they were too small, even though they were universal.

Remember FWD have to be rock solid to get any traction. RWD can be much softer, and still have same (actually much better!) cornering ability.

Omega also has dual rate springs for more comforatble ride, so there is an element of softness initially.

Stick with it a bit ;)
