MV6 is unwell - Grinding noises at fan temp..
« on: 19 February 2008, 11:19:51 »

Just discovered this whilst coming into work and sitting in city centre traffic standstill, felt a bad vibration inside the car and a grinding noise - not sure if it was mine or the Chelsea tractors / buses etc...anyway it came on again further down the road and yep its mine...

Had a quick investigate when i got to our underground car park - bit dark.

Now the aux belt seems fine, as is performance, coolant level, engine temperature etc.

I suspect that as the noise comes on and off in line with when the fan comes on and off that ive identified the issue..so any thoughts - would it be a siezed motor, are there any issues down that way...

I cant see if the fan is actually rotating or not due to lack of light and tools  :(

It is VERY noise - im starting to think your right again, cos the noise comes and goes at fan kick in temperature....and the noise is there for 30 seconds or so then goes of its own accord (like the fan has gone off)

The engine temperature goes down as if thre fan has done its job, so it must still be working but not very well.... :-/

get it idling on the drive, wait for the fans to kick in, the stop the fans with something, see if the noise stops instantly

Aye i can imagine spinning round with it...

Pulling the relay will be fine wont it?  bearing in mind its used for motorway only journeys ( i live on a hard shoulder and drive to the next junction  ;D)

I`ll keep an eye on the temperature obviously.

Mark is there any point me investigating this in relation to repairing etc or simply get a new fan?

Another fan would be the ideal......I might be able to send one back up with Hotel21 if its of use?

As for running with it off, as long as the two aircon fans are working ok (fuses intact) then you still have quite a considerable amount of cooling anyway.

Disconnect the 'cooling fan thermo-switch' plug, located directly below the top hose, there are three connectors numbered 1, 2 & 3, 1 is black/earth, if you take a wire from 2 to the body earth main fan will run at 'low speed', if you connect 3 to earth main fan will run at 'high speed'.
p.s. if it is the fan I have a spare you can have  :y

i have a pair of tractor fans if that is of any use?

As to testing, the big 30A fuses are easier to remove than relays or poking fingers in!
