Started noticing lately that my Tractor Van (2.5TD Estate) is really smoking when I  boot the thing, its my works mobile so mainley sits in London traffic at low to stationally speeds, so at least once a day I give a good blast to clear the crap out, but its  starting to look embarissing with the amount of crap smoke that's  coming out.

The Miles is just over 110K and has allways been looked after (ish, it is a diesel).

I'm I right in thinking worn Turbo or Piston rings or is it something else, any Car Care Product kwick fixes or is she getting to that age now.

Black smoke is incomplete combustion.

Renew air filter and treat the car to a tank or so of either the new diesel V-max or alternatively, use a diesel injector cleaner.  An oil and filter change would not go amiss either.

Once its all warmed up nicely, an Italian tuneup may just dislodge any crud on the injector pintles and leave it running clean thereafter....

Also, we used to run BMW 2.5 TD's for a while.  If they had been sitting idling for any length of time - 10 minutes and upwards - then, when you moved off either easily or hooffing it, it was like a WW2 destroyer laying a smoke screen until it all cleared up about 2 miles later....

Might be something the same for the Omega with lots of stop/go city traffic....

If its Black smoke could be the EGR valve, i know Shoguns, Pajero's & Transits smoke like crazy with a stuck EGR valve, as long as its not blue smoke dont worry too much, went to a diesel specialist with a mate of mine and he bollocked my mate for not giving it full throttle to the rev limiter for 1/4 mile at least once a week, drive em too gently and they soot up he said!!!!

Out of interest, what fuel do you use.  I find my tractor lives up to its smokey name on supermarket fuel.  A couple of tanks of proper branded fuel clears this for a while.

Also, worth checking air and fuel filters, both should be replace at least every 2 years (preferably anually).  Also may be worth emptying fuel filter and refilling with neat "Diesel Magic" (expect it to run a bit rough for a couple of mins) to give the injectors a good clean.

I try and avoid Super Market fuels, mainly because My MV6 hates the stuff. so the tractor normally gets filled with Shell or Texico normal Diesel as thats pretty much whats common round here (Bl**dy expensive now £1.10) so I think I'll do what everyones suggested and in addition treat her to a Tank of Premium Diesel, although I find that stuffs rearer these days.

PS. My local Mechanic says fill diesels up and whack a gallon of parifin in once in a while (clean out)??. But never had the balls to do it!, any thoughts.

I would have thought that parafin would create clouds of white smoke (at least that's what our V8 Ford Galaxy Sunliner used to to when we ran it on Aladin Pink in the 60s!)

So  did my beetle when i used to run it on a 50/50mixture of petrol and paraffin purely cos i was skint, but it used to take it in its stride from yorkshire to oxford every week,
But back to the TD wouldnt do it with modern diesel as its lubricicity is already well down on old style diesel,
 if you want it to stop smoking then use heating oil mixed at a ratio of 25litres heating oil to one pint of engine oil, mate of mine has done thousands of miles on this and at the MOT they couldnt get a reading on the smoke test cos it didnt make any!!!!

its a polite way of saying taking the revs right up towards the red line, quite quickly, repeatedly....

Or giving the car a right good booting to get the engine working quite hard....

You seen how some Italians drive??
