Knocking sound from my suspension
« on: 05 March 2008, 17:04:32 »

This one is a bit of a mystery, but you guys seem to know everything about Omies, hopefully you can give me some ideas. I bought my car about 2 years ago, and after a month I began to hear a knocking-like sound from the front passenger side wheel when going over minor bumps.  I took my car in for a full service and had the front two shocks changed. After a few weeks it started up again. The next time I took it to get my car inspected I told another mechanic to check it out and change what needed to be. He said it was the stabilizer, changed it, and it was good for about 4 weeks. Started up again..I figured I'd just try and forget about it, although very audible.

Then I saw that my two front tires (both less then a year old) had the inner thread completely worn away. I bought some new winter tires and took in for suspension tests to a different mechanic. They tightened some things, knocked around a few places, but didn't change anything. The car felt brand new....for a month and a half. Now I have the same sound again. This afternoon I took it to yet another wheel and suspension mechanic, he said everything looks ok and we spent about a half hour trying to figure out what the sound is.

Sorry about the long text, but figured it would help to have a background story. So 4 mechanics , 2 new tires, a stabilizer, a set of new shocks, and alot of cash later....any ideas? :-[

I assume they were new good quality drop links (stabiliser bars) as the very cheap ones have been known to only last a short period of time.

All the wishbones ok.

The inner tyre wear will have been the result of to much camber which hopefuly has been sorted already.

knocking like that can be caused by a broken spring (I had one where the broken bit - 10cm long - was sitting in the cup at the bottom of the strut) .  You couldn't see it but rattled everytime you went over a bump.

But would have thought that would have been found when you had the struts replaced.   Maybe worth checking the bottom of the spring is as it should be (same on both sides)
