...... and another little device that determined if you were braking hard enough....if it thought not....it would brake for you. .......

Emergency Brake Assist.
I seem to remember Merc being on Watch Dog or similar cos a few owners considered that the EBA stepped in uneccessarily.

Both my mercs had a button on the dash marked ESP.....if you pressed it a big warning triangle light came on......warning....you had turned off TC/ABS and another little device that determined if you were braking hard enough....if it thought not....it would brake for you.

Never seen an Omega with an ESP button  :-/

Interestingly i managed to crash one of my mercs........coz it took over the braking for me.......it just went for a slide into the rear of BMW convertible  ;D

Wierd sensation when the brake pedal just drops to the floor......when it takes over braking........

Tho i did considerable damage to my merc (still reckon i would have stopped in time under my control) the funny part was ...... the roll bars went off on the BMW.......punching two holes through his rag top  ;D ;D

Now that is funny!  Bet he wasn't too pleased with two tent poles sticking out the top!  ;D ;D

What does it do in the mini facelift? In my car it has the traction control button, I've always assumed this just controls wheel spin by monitoring the wheel speeds - is this not the case?

Lol, its ESP in the very basic form on all mini fcaelift onwards V6 cars in as much as it does not use a yaw sensor....

yes, though it brakes individual wheels to control it.

I agree.  But could be classed as a very simple stability system, as it does apply brakes to rear wheels (post 98).

But without steering and direction sensors, cannot be classed as a true ESP.

I think some manufacturers call that EDL, electronic diff lock?  A more advanced TC, but not really stability control.  Friggin dangerous on a powerful FWD is what it is!  Melt your brakes coming out of one roundabout and find that you have none left at the next roundabout!  >:(

Working in Milton Keynes, I have no trouble killing the brakes without electronics helping me..... ;D

Just had a look at the manual for my Omega and it talks about ESP being an optional extra in addition to TC and ABS. The way it talks about it implies that it has a yaw sensor "detects understeer / oversteer".

In vehicles with ESP, the TC light and button have a symbol that looks like a triangle with a car swerving around inside it instead of the usual "TC" letters.

Anyone got it?

As said above... I saw several German brochures mentioning that ESP will be optional on (very) late facelift, but it either never made it into production by the time the Omega was dropped, or if it was then it was never made available for UK cars....
