Hello All,

As you may have read Im a newbie, looking into buying an Omega, but what type should I buy.

I have around 2.5k may be able to stretch a tad further, it needs to be an estate as I run a Mobile Disco so need the room in the boot.

I also tow a caravan.

A couple of other things, can a Omega run on Veggy oil (Obviously the Diesel versions)

Any idea how much to convert a Petrol variant to LPG?

Im not overly fussed on fuel, but looking at the future on way fuel prices are going, I want to keep in mind a long term plan.

Oh, one last question, the 7 seater conversions, any idea how easy it is to get the conversion?

You need a 3.0 elite mate, all the toys you can think of and plenty of power.  I know where there is one too and you will have lots of your money left too :y

DOn't think 7 seat and LPG go together, but Taxi Driver has a spare wheel mounted tank and a false floor.


Anyway just make sure V6

Gonna stand up for a slap on this, but imho the V6 would be too unreliable for your work I would say. You aren't going to be popular when the bride is waiting for her first dance and you are busy trying to change a crank sensor, dis pack, *insert relevant part here*.

The V6 is WAY too thisty also for the type of work, you'll end up blowing all your hard earned on juice (of the petroleum variety, not on beer like it should be  :D ) LPG isn't much of an option when you need the load bay and there's a chance you need a spare wheel.

But I would definately buy an omega estate though, probably 4 cylinder, not sure if you could push your budget to a DTi?

I've only ever seen one 7 seater omega conversion, not sure who it was done by but did look the business.

Veggie oil, general conscensus is it would perhaps be ok mixed 50/50 on the 2.5 diesel at your own risk (also used in range rover, old beemers etc) but probably not on the 2.2 DTi. Depends how much you value your fuel pump at £1000 a pop  8-)

.....Or just buy a V6  ;D

Sitting at 80mph in 3.0 returns 29.4 mpg, the 2.5 returns 35.4 mpg. What does your 2.2 do?
I think that is good, and there are a few people on the Forum that do tow caravans and have no problems with them....
As long as you service them properly they will look after you.
You get a lot of car for the money :y

Just a bump for relevant parties

.....DTi, average fuel figures around 37mpg knocking around town, 48mpg on a motorway run. Towing heavy trailer on a run 33-35mpg.

I think one thing in common with all omegas as you say mate, you do get an awful lot of car for the money! As Loo-knee says, make sure its been well looked after, perhaps more important than the mileage on these cars.

I drive around 30,000 miles a year in my V6's, with good maintenance there should not be reliability problems once you have fixed any pre-existing problems. Mine have to start and run every day for work.

There's not much to beat 6 cylinder smoothness, quiet and effortless running.

My son and I also do mobile disco's and TBH, the Omega is one of the best estate cars for the job. With previous smaller estate cars we could never get all the equipment in and ended up having to use a second car. With the Omega, everything goes in with room to spare. :y
Your biggest decision will be what engine size to buy. I use a 3.2 MV6 but that's because I always wanted one. I have to say that it's not particularly economical when fully loaded and doing fairly short stints around town, but it is effortless with the amount of power on tap.

As "our Graham" would say......"the decision is all yours." ::)
