Stalling/auto box wierdness/floppy linkage
« on: 15 March 2008, 19:45:36 »

Wierd sounding message, i know - but i suspect two of them could be related..?

Brought the new purchase home today (2.0 16V estate - or it tourer - Auto) and noticed 3 little niggles..

Stalling - probably a well covered topic (one mate said it'll be a sensor - and always the last one you change), but after its got warm - I pull up to a stop; revs drop to an indicated 500rpm, followed by a bit of "misfiring", then stalls within about 10 seconds.  If I "two-foot" it and keep the revs@ 750-ish, no misfiring and no stalling.

The Auto box - when cruising @60+ with gentle throttle, the revs drift upto +200rpm with the throttle like old auto boxes with no lockup on top.  Give it a bit more throttle, and the lockup re-engages.  It also enagages lockup on overrun.
Could these 2 be TPS related, or do Omegas do this?

Third problem - there's a lot of "slack" in the gear selector lever, especially when in D (about an inch) - linkage worn somewhere?  Is there a "common" failrue point, or just get under there and have a nose?

Sorry for the barage of questions - but where better to ask?  Aside from needing the wheels re-balancing, its a cracking car - why didn't i buy one sooner?!?!?

Stalling is a common problem. 1st try ICV and small breather from rocker cover to inlet manifold, there's a how to in the maintenance guide, Although I did this, the cam sensor EGR valve and a new inlet manifold gasket before finally sorting  the stalling and rough idling. All available in the maintenance guides.  :)  Lift off the selector gaitor and check for secure fasteners.

That's what the forum's for..  Ask as many questions as you like, also post up your findings for others to learn from...   ;)

Does sound like ICV fault....  you could have a vac leak too, the TPS's don't seem to give many probles on Omega's, worth checking all your vac pipes and having a good clean out first :y

OK - had a look at the breather pipes and ISCV.  Breathers were pretty choked up and the baby breather pipe had perished at the cam cover end.  Can't find my long nose pliers to get at the bottom clip, so trimmed it back to good-ish rubber for now.  Stubs into the cam cover seem clear.
ISCV is a bit gunky inside (swilled it out with Meths as can't find my carb cleaner at the moment...must be with my pliers!), so will see how it behaves in a bit.

Oil was past its best, so have changed it (what is the recommended viscosity? I've used 10-40), and will change it again in a week or 2.  New air filter next on the list - onyl because local factors didn't have one in stock.

Now found the centre exhaust section has a pin leak...more jobs!

Sorry, but you are just wasting your time and money unless you
clean out the small Breather Jet.
Follow my guide and explanation on why I say that.

Also, just noticed that you said that you only bought the car
yesterday, have problems, but don't mention the EML light.

Being cynical I would suggest that you check that your EML light
works and that nobody has taken the bulb out to hide a fault.

When sure that the EML light is working, carry out a 'Paperclip
Test'. The following link will tell you how to do it, and the video
will show you which light you are looking for.

Don't forget to do your's (2.0L 4 pot) with ignition on but engine
NOT running.
