Hi have an (N) 96 2.0 16v estate.
Is it worth putting a new/recon engine in?
Any ideas on price and where to buy?
Ideally would have to be fully installed.

Would this be a viable option or is time to look for a different car?

Ps Would it come with cambelt and such?

New engines come bare normally, ie no ancilliaries but depends on where your buying it....

Probably get an ebay one for a few hundred max but do the belts etc when sinking it in.

You've got to ask yourself if it's worthwhile and what the car will be worth even with a new engine. TBH, a reasonable 2nd hand engine would be MUCH better value, but with slightly higher risk. Some engine reconditioners are cowboys too.

I would probably get a 2nd hand engine and freshen it up, but sometimes the need is more urgent than that.

thats going to be expensive, and on top of the enging costs.....with the greatest of respect to your car and in line with what Kevin has replied....

Last time I changed an engine it was out of the car and on a stand in 45 minutes and took maybe an hour to put back in.

.. but there are a lot more accessories to connect / disconnect on an Omega.

I'd say unless you can do it yourself or on "mates rates" it's probably not worth it.

Most scrappers offer a guarantee on 2nd hand engines.

In favour,there is the argument of already knowing the car and feeling comfortable with it. Have you already spent alot of money on it?

I'd argue, does the rest of the car warrant fitting a new engine? I.e. what is the state of suspension, brakes, gearbox, bodywork, tyres etc?

I think if you can go to a reputable scrapyard, get an engine with a known, low mileage and some kind of guarantee (often no more than 30 days), you'd be better off in someways than a recond engine.

If the engine was manufacturer built and has done, say 60k miles, you can be reasonably confident it'll be good for another 100k, by which time will you still have the car?

On a reconditioned engine, it all depends how well the engine has been built, which isn't as consistent as manufacture. If someone has done a thorough job it will be every bit as good as a new engine from the manufacturer, however, there's every chance it will have been freshened up on the cheap and may be a worse bet than a used unmolested example. :-/

I've got white smoke coming from the oil filler cap and dipstick.
Then stalls when warm and or put into gear.

Without knowing condition of car, and N reg base spec estate is probably around £500 value.  A recon engine, probably around £500 - £750 and same again for fitting.  Probably not viable unless you can do it yourself.  Probably better to sort the problem.
