C20LET
« on: 16 October 2007, 21:46:22 »

How viable would a c20let in an omega be?

I know people say keep the v6 as its got grunt , but mine is a 2.5v6 and feels grunty with onlt 167 Ibft of torque. I know of an astra gsi running 305bhp with 321 Ibft of torque.

Surely this would be faster and more grunty.

I know people say until the turbo kicks in its flat but if im honest so is mine especially in a high gear until it gets past 3000rpm

Any Ideas?

Forgot to add , the omega has a kerb weight of 1500kg , the calibra has a kerb weight of 1390 , so if i lost the 110kg it should be as torquey as a calibra turbo shouldnt it?

I think that would be a brilliant Omega , turbo , rwd and comfy.

the LET needs a fair bit of work on it to produce the sort figures that GSI is putting out......

i believe someone has done a LET in a omega before.....or was it a senator?? cant remember

It'd get a bit more punishment in an Omega than in a lighter car, too. Might affect its' longevity at that state of tune.

TBH, if you want that sort of power it'd be a better choice to drop a standard GM V8 in.

There's going to be a fair bit of engineering involved in both solutions to sort out engine management, cooling, exhausts, etc. Given the choice I know what I'd go for 8-)

Yeah its just v8 alot of money and mega fuel bills all the time. I like the idea of turbo as i love the noise and boost. WOuld love to turbo the v6 but its just so damn weak as an engine and the cooling isnt the best to start , never mind with another ?00 horsepower

You will have to do alot of improvisations - but yes it is doable.
Try finding one for less than £1k  :(

Be fun in the wet mind  ;D

I cant see how it would be hard at all. I just buy an omega with a 2.0 16valve engine. Then all the mounts and prop are there just waiting for me to bolt the engine block too the gearbox and away we go.

lol ok, what about where the turbo is going to sit (main prob IMO)? you'll need to fabricate an exhaust, lsd diff, fueling....

Then you need to look at what flywheel and clutch to use...

Big job but like I said, it's doable - been thinking of it myself  :y

I would have thought a crated new V8 could be had for less money than it would cost to develop a LET to that sort of power. Maybe I'm wrong. kti car builders are certainly getting them for reasonable money.

Turbo cars do seem to give a bit more of a rush on first impression, but I believe most of that is down to them being tuned a little crudely by most "chip tuners" without too much attention to boost pressure control. You get a big step in the torque curve as it spools up which then subsides as the boost pressure is reined in. As I say, fun at first but try driving it anywhere near the limits with that big notch in the curve ready to catch you out when you least expect it.

It really depends what you want to do with it once it's on the road, really. As a road or track car I'd have the V8 any time but if you're headed to Santa Pod it probably doesn't make much odds.

When you say for decent money what would a crated GM V8 cost and what sort of power/torque does it push out?

Yeah but woudnt that be very costly in terms of wiring , gearbox etc

Depends on weather you are going to be doing the work yourself or paying someone else...

Yeah spose.

I think the best way is to stick with vauxhall engines , that way it shouldnt be so hard for wiring etc

Really dont know if the c20let would be as nice to drive as the v6?

Ultimately the v6 would be the engine to turbo but like i said before i think they are a weak engine , and the cooling is a bad point on em.
