Got an advisory on these for last years MOT and having been under the car today to clean up the brake lines i've had a look at these and the drivers side one is especially mashed.

I know they're a bit tricky to change but does anyone have a guide or some hints on how to go about getting them out and the new ones in and what about the special tool that is shown in the haynes manual,  it doesn't look like much but if anyone can give me a bit of infor on it I should be able to knock one up at work.

I'm about to do mine. I've had the plate off to have a look.

The bolts are 15mm and 18mm neither come in most ratchet sets.

Apparently you can either pull the bush out with a claw hammer or crowbar - there is a lip - or slip something above the bush (large socket) and jack up the subframe.

I did a pair this morning!!! took me longer to jack the car up and put on axle stands than it did to change the bushes!! the secret is to put the axle stands on the subframe itself this locks the subframe in positon so when you remove the bolts it cant move\!! if you dotnput the axle stands on the subframe the damn thing moves and you cant get the centre bolt backl in!! trust me i am speaking form experience here!! tools required trolley jack 2 axle stands placed as above one windy gun/ratchet  2 suitable sizes sockets, claw hammer and large screwdriver can of plusgas/wd40 or similar and a tube of rubber grease to coat the new ones in so they slide straight back in there!!
now then when old ones off push new ones in as far as you can then insert centre bolt and tighten till it wont go anyfurther the bush will not be fully home yet , remove centre bolt and place the plate upside down and reinsert centre bolt tighten and it will push the bush all the way in!! remve centre bolt again place the plate the correct way up and insert all bolts job done  it took under 45 mins to do both sides th=is morning!!

Does that mean the rubber part comes out of the metal cup?

I was replacing mine because the rubber appears to have come away from the metal sides. I thought the bush would be metal core, rubber bit, then the rubber bonded to metal sleeve/cup.

If the bush is rubber with just the metal bit in the middle then mine are probably OK.

nope bush is a large bush with the centremetal bush which fits round the bolt bonded to the rubber, the large rubber portion is a press fit into its holder on the car s subframe the rubber or brake grease is just to assist the large bush into place if yours are looking raggedy then replace them!!

And on the plus side I think mine are OK then  

I thought I had a problem because the although the inner metal core was bonded in fine the rubber didn't appear to be properly bonded to the outer cup.

It seems that it isn't supposed to be - it just pushes in there. Excellent news I can fix the other problems instead.....
