is sludge in the oil filler cap related to  the oil cooler leaking the dipstick looks clean

Sludge in the filler cap is usually crap oil, alot of stopping and starting (short journeys)...
Update your Profile mate so we know what car you are driving (e.g 2.5 V6)

likely just short journeys. Remember, your breathers will be in same state.

Agree with above, change your oil (Vx is best) and clean your oil breathers. there is a how to on this site mate
