Whilst reversing with a car on a trailer my auto box was slipping, the front wheels of the car were in a hollow and I could not get the car and trailer to go backwards (trailer brake disabled) Once I pulled forward a little and then selected reverse it was o.k. The gearbox was cold. I can deal with some slip in reverse but is it likely to do it in forward gears too ? i.e does it have a separate reverse band ?

Sounds like it needs a fluid change and filter as the oil may be old and low in level :-/

If it's low I will just top it up for now, can anyone recommend a fluid spec. to use  and would 1 litre be enough for a top up ?

Dexron 3. If you undo the fill/level plug with the engine NOT running you'll loose fluid whether the fluid level already in there is correct or not.

I would use Dextron2 to top up with. If your going to re[place all the fluid during a service then i would use Dextron3.
1 litre should do it unless its very low :-/

I use one of those garden spray kit things that usually used for weed killer. its almost made for the job!  8-)

However, chaps, he has a 2.5TD... and as such a AR25 box, so my vote is the box is shagged.

Whats the millage?

120K+ and it means the box is dead, replace with an AR35.

To top the box up you will need a ratchet and a 13mm socket.

ensure the car is level, if i jack the car( i dont tend to anymore as i am a skinny cow and can get under the car without it) i jack the car until its level (if not already). loosen the filler plug. right start your engine. i then run my box through the gears then place it back into park. after this once the car has ran for around 5/10 mins. take the filler plug out and start filling. i tend to use a 1ltr bottle with the spout on it, keep filling until the box starts over flowing then quickly replace the filler plug. tighten

with a Trade Card the oil from VX works out at £3.80 per bottle.
