you can't paperclip a 2.2

Only 2.0/2.5/3.0 petrols can be paper clipped.

Drive by wire engines, 2.2/2.6/3.2 cannot be paper clipped.

Need tech2, either real or cheapo

Cam Sensor far easier to replace than crank sensor, i'd do the cam sensor first and get the codes cleared and see what comes back.  :y

If the problem is resolved the EML will not illuminate anymore. It's possible that the engine management is getting confused as both sensors are required otherwise the car will go into 'limp home' mode.

Not unknown for both sensors to fail around the 40K marks. As it's far easier to replace the Cam sensor I would do that first (get a genuine one as the eBay ones aren't too wonderful) and see if the lamp goes out.

Is the car limited to 4000 RPM? This is the limp home mode.

yes it cuts out at 4500 rpm. it only started doing this today but when i did the paperclip test yesterday it gave me the cam sensor code 0340 but the eml wasnt on and had never come on. is it normal for the test to show codes even if the eml isnt on? :-?

0340 common on 4 cylinder omegas. Change cam sensor.  Pattern ones known to be troublesome sometimes, so stick to genuine.

If eml isn't on then the code is stored but not current. Cam / crank sensor on 2.0 can often be ok from cold then flag codes when warm.

Perhaps best to get the codes cleared and see what comes back.
