I have what looks like a gearbox oil leak but it turns out it's the offside rocker cover gasket. oil leaks all down round the side of the engine and drips off gearbox. might b worth checking that.

I have leaking rocker covers aswell which are getting done but gearbox is playing up sounds like level is low so that 1st port of call see if it sorts it.

sounds like a plan.

Make sure you clean the breathers out when changing rocker gaskets. theres a howto on here somewhere... otherwise you will need to replace them again pretty soon.

Remember the ATF level needs to be checked with the car level with the engine running. :y

I'd have a look to see where the leak is coming from too. Not too bad if it's from the sumps but if ti's from the bellhousing or output shaft it might be more of a problem.

I agree - mine is a 98 3.0 and just the same.   I would change the fluid rather than just topping up.

I Pray for you that its from one of the sumps and not the bellhousing.

As kev, pat and i found out last weekend Oil from the bell housing can be come expensive and difficult to diagnose.

good luck

Dont have a clue where it is coming from yet as the rocker covers are leaking, got new ones and ready to go on, on monday underneath will never rust put it that way there is that much oil everywhere!!!! Topped the gearbox oil up and that cured the the not going into gear. Could really do with steam cleaning underneath the car to find out where leaks are coming from, would this be ok to do when up on ramp??
Just for the record gearbox took about 1.5L

Mine leak drips from where the bell housing connects to the engine. you can see it dripping after a run. if its bad you can see the oily deposits up the back of the car.  :'(

the underside of my motor is covered in ATF. the only good thing about it is when we take the gearbox off everything comes off nice and easy.

if you get it on a ramp take some pictures for us. use a peace of kitchen roll to wipe up some of the oil and then post the picture. ill be able to tell you then what it is. i have gotten used to what ATF looks like when its been splattered every where. :'( ;D ;D
you will know if its ATF as it smells sweet ish and will be pinkish when hot. it stinks when it gets hot. (when mine gets on my exhaust)

Sitting at the lights with the car smoking its head off is not a good look is it  :D Will get a picture sorted but the whole underneath of the car all the way to the back is covered, havnt changed the gaskets on gearbox yet just topped it up to see if it was ok. Have you sorted yours out and how much did it cost? Not be easier getting a second hand box?

its safer to get mine sorted bit more of a pain gettin the help to get it of then putting it back on as the TC needs to be sent off and it takes 3day min. to take the box off ....Kev , Pat and i have it off within and hour. an back on within2. its just get kev and pat together again at the same time to suit all partys. ( Heres hopin they dont mind helpin me again.......oh and Kev Pat if your reading this ill jase Jase to cook again! :)i know you like his cookin)

As for your car smokin at the light it sounds like the ATF has gotten on to the exhuast and is being burn off, can you smell the burning? you will tell the difference between burrnin engine oil and burnin ATF.

oh just to let you know I wont be back on OOF until tuesday.

EDIT: cost to fix the box this time round will be £280 that inclueds having the Torque converter recond.  its the safer option i think still not 100% decided

£280 surely you could get a second hand one with a garauntee for less than that?
Tends to smoke when you have give it a bit comes from under the bonnet which think would be rocker covers also from the back of exhaust not sure if atf or engine to be honest havnt smelt it as put it straight in garage as soon as gearbox was going funny.
