cambelt change query
« on: 04 May 2008, 20:22:52 »

ok  so I'm most of the way through a cambelt change (2.5 genuine belt with no markings....).  Hot a few problems:  forgot to get the tension right on the first set up so no 2 and 4 cam jumped a few teeth when I was turning the belt over.  I gently turned them into alignment and reinserted the lock tools.

Have now got to the point where the tensioner is set to the top edge of the mark, all four cam markings are spot on with the timing guage and the engine has been turned over by hand a couple of times without problems.

Have i missed anything or am i worrying unnecessarily...  What else should I double check?

and BTW the DVD is invaluable.  Thanks to all involved.

p.s. title modified as I realised that I couldn't spell last night.

if the crank is locked, and cam markers line up with timing kit, tensioner also lines up, and its been turned over a few times, its fine.

How many teeth did it slip, as thats not good.

yep everything lines up fine.  turned over twice already and it looks good to me.

cams 2 and 4 slipped about 5 teeth but as I was turning over very slowly and I think 2 and 4 slipped because they were in the opening phase so probably got away with it.

As I do not need the car this week, I thought it better to check in with the experts.....

also had a bit of a problem getting the belt right VX belt without marking!.  On first fitting the centre tensioner was completely backed off, the bottom right was fully 'on' , but I refitted the belt again and both tensioners are roughly middle of their range so I guess on first attempt I got the crank one tooth out because I could not get the timing marks aligned on first attempt

update:

looks like I worried unnecessarily as I've got it all back together and it is running smoothly.  One remaining problem:

when i first started up there was a definite screech from a pulley for a few minutes.  I dropped the aux belt off and it continued so it was from the cambelt area.  when I put the aux belt back on and restarted for the third time it was barely audible.  Now it has gone away after 15 minutes of running.

My guess is that it was the cambelt centring itself on the pulleys so nothing much to worry about but am I wrong?  Should I be worried or is it best to just keep an ear open?

Did you replace the belt and tensioners or just the belt?

The screech is not normal I'm afraid - I'd keep an eye on it.

Ah hang on - are you sure it's not your secondary air injection. That can make a good screech - and after doing work you're always more sensitive to any odd noises.

had this occur a couple of times at work the first time it was the lower guide pulley was tensioned inncorrectly (not by me but phenix vauxhall wimbledon) and the screech was the belt rubbing on the lower pulley as it left melted rubber all over it and the pulley spat its greece out,not good :o :o :o :o
second time it was a combination of above and leaking water pump.
So to be totally honest i would take the cover off and re tension the belt matey :y

definitely not the SAI pump as mine is pretty quiet.

I'm 100% happy the tensioners are set correclty as I rechecked them three times given my earlier hiccup.

i'm going to try starting a couple of times during the week then strip back to the belt at the weekend.

Thanks for the thoughts....

Seen it when either cover backplate is loose, or cambelt cover itself not fitted right, and belt rubs on them.

I definitely think it is cover off time and recheck but after my earlier little hiccup I was ultra cautious.

Strange thing is that when I took the cover off it looked like the old belt had been rubbing on something judging by the amount of rubber in the cover....
