Ign leads OR Dis pack??
« on: 11 May 2008, 13:51:03 »

Hi,
Having had the mis-firing problem and subsequently replaced the cam cover gaskets yesterday(a real pain in the arse job), cleaned & wiped the oil off of the plug leads - engine still mis-firing.
iQ - I thare any way to identify if this would be the plug leads at fault Vs the Dis pack. I connected a s/plug externally and cranked the engine - no spark, confirmed.
Q. Are the Bosch leads and aftermarket dis-pack from Andrew Page good enough quality? OR do i need Vx parts?
Thanks,
Stephen.

I would go the cheapest option first.
Bosch leads are around £60-70 for Halfords :y

Motor factor leads are fine, I paid £40-00 for the set, but spent money on a set of NKG Iridium plugs, no misfires since, that was 26k ago, still not replaced the dis pack, 144k on the clock, good luck.

Thanks guys,
Great, I Will try replacing leads first and see if that clears the mis-fire. Hopefully I wont have to replace dis-pack - with the scuttle off at present I can hardly see the dis-pack behind there.
Cheers :),

Thanks,
I used Vx plugs. I was hoping that by replacing plugs, cleaning breather system, replacing cam gaskets and cleaning up the oil mess that the mis-fire would simply go away. Not so....
I'll keep you posted on the result of replacing the plug leads next.

I found a big difference using magnecor leads and NGK LPG iridum plugs.

Done my cam cover gaskets while car was on SORN for a couple of months.
Just put back on road this last week and after about 100 miles of use No. 2 cylinder went down.
Thought of plug, then lead and was hoping it was not the dreaded dis-pack.
Turned out it was HT lead. Thinking that all the pulling about trying to do the gaskets may have damaged the lead :-/
Bad news is set of leads VX quoted £107.75 + vat
Local motor factor £32.00 inc VAT
Me - I went and got just the No.2  lead from local breaker
Price ONE pound ;D ;D
Motor is running fine again - but will get a complete new set in the very near future.

Bugg#r to put on though - a little mirror on a stick is really handy.
I pinched SWMBO's make up mirror and gaffa taped  it to a welding rod ;D ;D

Good luck  -- Regards, Big Al

Thanks Big Al,
I think that you made a good point! Might be alot easier replacing the bad lead instead of ALL the leads. I will see when i remove the plenum to get a better look.
Cheers, :y
