.......  why not make them automatic.  ......
Vauxhall have at least made a step in the right direcetion & made them relay latched so they automatically switch off when you turn the main lights off. It does prevent people driving around weeks after the last bit of morning mist with 'em still on.
As have most cars since the late 80s ;)

I know they are a pain when twits leave them on. Perhaps someone else was driving the car last, and they don't they're on, and definately don't know how to switch them off. However, just occasionally, they are useful. I have been in a couple of pee-soupers where the fog lights were the only thing to show me the road, and the rear fogs handy to stop that artic behind parking in my boot.

Vauxhall must have been slow on the uptake then as 86 Carltons didn't 89 & 92 Senators didn't. Neither did 94 Hyundais.  :-?

That artic behind gets blinded even worse due to the driving position, trust me. Nobody in any vehicle should tailgate but if they're going to your foglights wo'nt stop them. I do'nt tailgate in my car or truck but foglights are a nuisance dreamt up by some pillock who'se read a book, attended a course so is now an expert. Foglights are a distraction & dazzle anyone behind you. i NEVER use mine as there is NO need. If people drove according to the conditions there would be no problem. For once this is'nt just my opinion but FACT.

I would say that sometimes (rarely) conditions do warrant their use....

Oh and don't get me started on front fog lights, they should be renamed to "chav warning lights" to alert other drivers to the presence of a retard behind the wheel who is liable to perform erratic lane changes at any time, and has a complete inability to indicate. A bit like how the yellow flashing light warns of slow moving vehicles ;D
I drive a truck myself but do'nt agree with flashing orange lights. Sadly they're required by law for over length or wide loads & the escort vehicles. I think orange (non flashing) lights are sufficient (known as marker lights) and the red/white triangular plates. There's nothing worse or more unsafe than following anything with flashing lights in dark wet spray conditions.

It is in fact illegal to drive with fog lights on unless the elements dictate otherwise.

On the other hand it is illegal to drive on 1 headlight, see far more people drive like this than ever before.
but then when do you see the police. Fast becoming an endangered species.
