Revs on autobox sticking - ring ding ding ding!!
« on: 12 May 2008, 15:08:09 »

Erm....

Got a problem with my autobox which I have posted about before, but not got to the bottom of yet. I've had the box topped up with DexIII but its not fixed the whole problem.

The gears are dead heavy and clunky resulting in jolts galore, and around 38mph if you ease off the throttle it slips out of gear into neutral - if you leave it you get 'Automatic Gearbox' message on the display. If you stick it in third it clunks back into gear with another jolt, then you can carry on driving.

Once the Automatic Gearbox message has appeared the cars limping. There's a crack in my rocker cover which means spark number 4 is oiling up (I used to cycle the ignition to get it out of limp whilst rolling but it won't work any more) so if anyone has a spare I would also be interested.

But the big question...whats the problem? The car only has 70k on it (S reg 2.0CDX). Is my gearbox fooked?

EDIT: forgot about the RING DING DING - seems to stick between 2nd and 3rd bouncing off the top of the revs like its trying to change but stuck.

Ouch could well be the correct word. Did I buy a lemon? Thought it would be ok seeing as most second hand miggys are high mileage.

How do I clean the selector switch? Would it be a feasible assumption if it only affects drive, not any other? Apologies for my noobness. I'm not great with cars.

How much should a s/h box be fitted, considering the cars only worth 700? And if this ones done 70k and knackered, is it a good idea to get one second hand, seeing as they have usually done 100k +?

the switch is on the side of the gearbox.take the cover off it and you might find dirt or damp inside.i sprayed wd40 in mine but other people may know of a better method.if you need a replacement box just hunt around,i got one from ebay 2 years ago for £40,and its been ok.it is a bit of a gamble but the price of a new one i would imagine would be a serious (4 figure) amount of dosh.

Nice one. I'll give it a go. Its not flickering or reading incorrectly etc so I don't think its that, but short of a replacement box its a good idea :-)

There's 2 on ebay at the mo going cheap, worth a pop.

Still not sure I'll get to the bottom of it. Prob end up driving it in 123 instead of D til its dead I reckon! Is it rare for an autobox to go bad after 70k?

Cheers mate.

You might consider fixing your engine problem first, if there is a bad misfire caused by failing ht leads, the engine failure could be causing your gearbox problems.
