got to be a manual for all those factors.

- performance gets sapped by auto (sport mode is quite entertaining though)
- mpg auto costs c.5mpg or so over manual on mixed driving
- reliability - look at the threads regarding auto problems (lots) vs manual (almost unheard of)

Personal preferance is obviously a biggy here - I personally hate automatics but mainly because I'm used to driving manuals.  Generally MPG and performance will be very slightly down on an automatic.  Not sure about reliability.

Scroll back on here through the pages and try to find posts about manual gear box problems.  On your way read about autobox thrust washers, oil leaks, selector switches.....

I agree it is down to personal preference, and I too prefer manuals, but for the criteria the OP listed, I think its a no brainer.

Mine sounds like it got straight cut gears ::)

Yes Pete but, what we dont know is if that is a real failure or some poor maintenance in the past (wrong oil?)

Could be. I changed the oil as soon as I got the car and the oil that came out looked clean but it could have been added after the gearbox started making the noise.
