Funny smell when the A/C's first turned on
« on: 13 May 2008, 20:15:08 »

Hi all. Lately there's been a funny smell coming from my A/C when i first switch it on, it's only just started doing it as of late last week & was ok before. Does it need some disinfectant off sorts, where does the disinfectant go & what's the best stuff to use?
All help greatfully received  :y

Did mine today as was also getting a bit of a plasticy whiff when turned on .Bought the "Coma" stuff from Halfords, cost me £11=95.Just start car with a/c set on recirculate and put cannister on back passenger side floor behind front seat.Shut all windows and let cannister disperse and leave running for 5 minutes. Then open all windows and let air through car.
Works a treat and now my a/c has a nice clean lemon smell..also gets rid of all bugs etc from system..I do it every year.I have tried other makes but the "Coma " stuff seems to have the best smell, others smell like disinfectant for weeks

And also check the scuttle drain on the passenger side (pollen filter location) since you could have some wet rotting veg due to water collecting in clogged drain.

Agreed.

When was it last changed? Does it have the correct one for facelifts?

Make sure the scuttle is clear and nothing is dead down there, changing the pollen filter makes a considerable difference if its old  :y

Hello "omegaman 2", had my aircon re-gased last week, it work really well but the air in the car now smells of 'dog', but I don't own one, have you used the Tesco aircon freshener/debug product, if so any good ? or anyone else.

Smell gone, along with bacteria & viruses according to the "Comma" air-con cleaner which cost £11-99 from Halfords. The local Tesco megga/24 hour store has reduced the car accessory department, so has no £5 'air-con cleaner'. Still at £12 for the Comma product it is still better than the £18 quoted by the company who recharged the air-con. Also fitted a new GM pollen filter. The car interior now has a faint smell of lemon, very pleasant.  :y :y

Re-gas is around £45 (if it's ok, with no leaks) yes they should empty the system, the cleaner gets rid of the stale smells, bacteria & viruses.
