just spent the afternoon messing with a x reg v6 vectra which appears to have oil cooler failure,trouble is i thought they went to stainless coolers in 1999 and this problem had disapeared.

I'm really not sure - I know of a 2000 model car that laidback and myself changed an oil cooler on, so I guess it's not unheard of on the later V6 lumps.

To be honest, after seeing what it can do to your entire cooling system, I'm contemplating replacing mine "just in case" - for the small cost of £90 and the easiness of replacing it...

As another observation - When changing failed oil coolers, I have noticed that the new ones do look different.. so could well be stainless ones.

Just for info, & not wishing to teach how to suck eggs etc etc   but stainless is NOT magnetic! Something to look out for if you didn't already know.

at times I've been holding a new oil cooler, I can't say I've ever had a magnet nearby

nope not stainless, same as omega part, recently done a 2002 2.6 vectra......

if i can help let me know   i have the process etched on my brain.....its more difficult in vectra as its one hell of a cramped engine bay

well its sort of omega related coz its the same v6 2.6 engine as fitted to an omega. the point being i was under the impression that oil cooler failure was a thing of the past.

i doubt that, head failure is very very rare

only heard of one vauxhall omega v6 with head failure in 3 years, thats 2.5, 2.6, 3.0 or 3.2. V6 design is pretty bombproof in that repect.

Oil cooler gives some classic symptoms of hgf.....but is cheaper and easier to repair.

Oh and the vectra will ue the same 2.5 or 2.6 engine - x25 or y26 so equally rare...
