Missing bit if impeller
« on: 25 May 2008, 13:34:09 »

Hi all
Water pump on my V6 collapsed - water pouring out through it.  On removal I was collecting ball barings from the pump!

On removal found that the cast impeller had shattered and that once piece was unaccounted for.  Having looked at the housing the missing piece is considerable larger than most of the exit holes - except possible that one leading to the thermostat.  Beucase of timing belt problems I have not had the car running properly since so I don't really know if it is overheating.

Question is - how seririous is this likley to be and, more importantly, were are the missing bits likley to end up.  I suppose it would be too much to hope that it would be somewhere accessable! :-/

It wil be in the waterways somewhere and could clog one at any time :(

This is more common on the TD, first time I've heard a V6 one fail!

Thanks James
Sometimes it is not so good to be first eh!  Give the timing problem in the other thread I posted it is kinda difficult to know what to do first.  Ho hum. :(

Hi,
So far never seen a V6 with a cast water pump impeller, usually formed mild steel.

Your missing piece can't have gone far, I would take out the thermostat and have a look.

I think you should find it before you call it job OK.

I've no idea what access you have to the water pump on a V6, but if the piece you're missing is made of mild steel as in the previous post. Try one of those little magnets on an extendable stick & have a poke around.

Good idea Sir Waspy.  Unfotunatley I have already tried that without any results, not even very tiny bits.  I may be lucky and it shattered into little bits that came out with the rest of the water but I doubt it.  Oh well.

Would you be able to back flush the pump area via a hose close by? You could try some good old pressure from a hose

Good idea Sir.
Now - which way is back I wonder.  It is at times like that I realise how little I know.
