......
re charge 9.99 ......

Mmm? Is that not just for a can of R134a refrigerant?

Yep. It'll be just to chuck a can in, almost certainly. Not worth bothering with, and of duboius legality - charging a system without first leak-checking it. The cans have all manner of "leak sealers" and other potions in them too, which are best avoided.

BTW... I noticed a shiny new air con servicing machine at WIM at the weekend...

Might be worth investigating. 2 birds with one stone.

Hate to mention it, but are Vx doing an air-con deal again this summer?

Could be worth looking in to.

can be done all they need is a bottle of R134a and some scales (which they'll have) but might not have the right adaptor to fit car valve to their gauges

Kwik-Fleece are ok if it's just a case of changing old gas. But if it's low then there's a leak somewhere. Kwik-Fleece do a pressure test but do not use UV dye. I had mine done last year. It was a hot day (Probably the only one last summer !) and I left there feeling cooler than a camel at the North Pole.
The following day it was just not doing it's thing. Went to a local Air-Con specialist. They used the UV dye and my condensor was glowing green under the UV light. It had become  porous with such a slow leak that it did not show up on the pressure test at Kwik-Fleece.
Replaced the condensor, re-gassed...The camel is now back at the North Pole.  :y
