Help? Not lift pump/plugs/leakoffpipes!
« on: 31 May 2008, 22:50:57 »

Sometimes it's a pig to start when cold or sat for  hours.
Glowplugs check out ok. dismantled lift pump (thank platty for pics) broke strainer at bottom but pump works strong. Leak off pipes look ok ,no sign of leaks. Car starts and runs on reserve. problem comes & goes . Parking downhill seems to help , but it could be my imagination.
Any ideas, just shelled out for new self levellors & bose? :'(

Change leak offs as a matter of course, and the similar pipes to/from injection pump.

As TB says above, change the leak of pipes and T pieces as they won't show signs of leaks but will let air in which pushes the fuel back to the tank so when cranking you are having to draw fuel all the way from the tank and bleed the fuel system.
The parking downhill thing probably isn't your imagination as the fuel can,t run back to the tank as easily  :y

as others have said but after that if no joy, check the two fuel pipes where they change from metal to rubber with a crimped joint very carefully for leaks, have had 2 cars with faults on this part and both had starting probems as it was letting air into the fuel system!! I actually found the first one cos i could hear a hiss when i turned engine off wth the plastic cover removed and when i grabbed hold of the joint the hiss changed its sound!!other one i could see diesel weep on the joint :y
