Yes. About 6" x 4", says Bosch Transmission Control Module on it.

What are the signs that its in winter mode???

Pulling away in 3rd??? No kickdown??? EML on????

Its a 2.2 ....... could be camshalft sensor........sounds likely for a 2.2  :-/

Is P0340 mentioned on the list of codes??

If P0340 is on the list......its the camshaft sensor  :y

If P1700 or P0700 is mentioned (g/b codes) get the g/b ecu read......if the g/b ecu complains of can bus errors........ignore them........2.2's seem to suffer those error codes  :y

It will do when you start the car from cold. It's the cold start program. Shouldn't do it when the engine is warm though.

No - cold start program is when it holds lower gears...

Camshaft sensor can cause all sorts of problems.  If you replace this I would imagine the car will be back to normal.  Make sure you buy genuine vauxhall as cheap ones of ebay and the like tend to be a false economy.
