Dear OOF, have just got a problem with my facelifted x reg 2.5, the drivers door check strap makes a loud clonk when the door is opened fully.
It opens normally to just past the first retaining point but when yu open it fully it seems to foul on somthing in the boy of the door.
When trying to close the door from fully open it requiries a very strong force at which point it gives a loud clonk and closes.
When fully open whatever holds the door firmly open does not now do so, it seems loose.
The door hinge pins seem fine.

Any thoughts?

Open all your doors one by one & give the strap a good oiling. Sounds to me like they've dried out.

Yup, crack of doom. Sort it before it does damage.

Change bush first, if that doesn't resolve, you may need reinforcement plates...

Have a good look at the mountings in the inner edge of the door --- where the strap goes into the body of the door.  Any signs of cracking in the metal will have to be remedied. As referred to above the strap itself is also suspect !

Thanks for your thoughts fellas I will of course do this as replacing the plastic bush seems easy BUT I have my misgivings cause the sloppyness and sound seems to be coming from the end of the check strap inside the door, I maybe wrong but dont think so.

Two 8mm bolts hold the 'check strap' to the door, look around the bolts to check for cracking, yes the metal will crack then break leaving a rectangular hole, not good, so check for any movement first.

thanks for your replies,
when you say 2 8mm bolts hold the check strap in to the door, i cannot see them,  i have removed the 10mm bolt securing the end of the check strap to the bodywork.
is it possible to undo the 8mm bolts from outside of the door with it still attached to the car and if it is, does the whole check strap assembley come out through the hole that the check strap operates through?
i dont want to have to take the door trim/card off in order to get at the faulty check strap to replace it.

Yes if you bend your head round a bit, where the strap enters the door itself you will see 2 bolts. Make sure they are tight and that as said there is no signs of cracking around the bolt holes

Thank you all for your replies, I looked at the listed maintenance guides for door card removal and repairing the check strap.
It's a lot clearer now.
It seems it is a 'known' problem area, as most things are to the combined gray cells of OOF.
