Camcover Gaskets & Plug Leads.
« on: 05 June 2008, 01:03:02 »

Hi all,
I set about changing my camcover gaskets today after cleaning the breather system out and also changing the plug leads and i must say what a sadist son of a b***h [smiley=evil.gif] who decided the positioning of the Dis pack must be and now know why a tunnie is recommended for this job [smiley=laugh.gif], i've been scared for life i think [smiley=cry.gif].

This may sound like a daft ? but can someone tell me where the 16 little rubber washers go on the camcovers?

    Thanks,
               Pete.

Same as above really, turn over the Cam Cover and look on the inside where the bolt holes are, I have found there has been sealer where the O ring sits, pull off all the excess sealer as the O ring sits in a little circular groove.. :y

Thanks for that guys, replaced them now :).

The washers had flattened and hardened so as to look part of the cover :-/.

I bought a Sykes Pickavant torque wrench with a low torque setting capability(4-20 NM photo below, great piece of kit and i got it brand new on eBay for half the retail price of £65)so i could get them correct, don't want to do this job again in a hurry :o.

What prompted you to do the HT leads? I'm just about to do my cam-belt with James and I've decided to go and renew all the likely candidates that may go wrong or wear out whilst we're in there. I'm doing the plugs. Do you think I should do the HT leads too or is this overkill if nothing is wrong in that dept.?

Dud a major replacement on mine this week.Whilst I was doing the cambelt/tensioners did the water pump/plugs and plug leads.Felt it easier to do whilst all stripped out as "belt,n,braces".Parts are only small extra cost whilst there.Plug leads are still a pain to change..you need arms 6ft long and multi-jointed.
As a beside I replaced the camshafts in my 2.5 with the 3.0 and the improvement is really noticeable,so for anybody else considering it ,well worth the work

  Hi,
I had to change my leads because when i bought the car it had an intermitant missfire which when i decided to do my Camcover gaskets led me to find the problem, #3 plug lead was all but broken in half where it joined the part that goes on the plug and on inspection found the others to be falling apart  :o. I suppose replacing them depends on their age and condition, something only you can decide :-/.

I would advise you to change the leads whilst you have the P/S cover removed, makes it a lot easier to get your hand round the back, have some plasters at the ready :(.

I'm a member of the Autobahnstormers club and had a new set of leads made up for £30 delivered, and they fitted perfectly :)

   Hope this helps.

               All the best,
                               Pete :y.
