Its time for a new desktop - mainly for the Mrs - I get to keep the 6 year old Dell :-X.   Good news is prices have really come down a lot since then :).

We need it for basic stuff Word, Excel etc,  (I have an old copy (legal) of Office so hope this will run on Vista or whatever), surfing and occasional games but nothing very heavy.

How does this one look for starters (seems decent all round spec as far as I can tell)?

(I'm not particularly loyal to Dell, just get their circulars)

I'm prepared to pay a bit extra for future proofing,  but have no need to overspec it.  (Frankly the old Dell is still running fine for my purposes with Win 2k)

If your Office is OEM, you cannot legally use on new system as the OEM Office licences are not transferrable.

If you go Vista, you need a minimum 1G RAM, ideally 2Gb.  Also, I would recommend a Core 2 Duo or better processor. Possibly overkill now, but for the extra £30 - £50 premium will help keep it a bit future proofed.

Thx TB I'll have a look there.

My Office is a proper boxed copy.
Is Core2 Duo better than AMD (64X2 Athlon Dual Core was the one I picked)?

There didn't appear to be much choice other than to go Vista from what I could see.

only disk and memory capacity need increase (for vista and other purposes) ..Others are ok..
